Diabetic bass players

I'm type 2. My mother was always worried that I'd get it cause her faher was type 1, and she got gestational type 2 just before she passed from pancreatic cancer in 2004. I've probably had it for a long time, but was diagnosed in 2002. Control it mostly with diet and excersise, and pills, but plan to get off the pills soon.......I hope.

Can't believe I found this club.
Diagnosed with Type 2 at 51 (8 years ago). I lost close to 100 lbs and should still lose another 30 lbs. Don't exercise per se but do a lot of walking and occasional physical work with my job. I changed my eating habits (although I still eat too much), eat regular meals, diet drinks only, and no white breads. With the diet changes and 2000mg of Metformin a day things are good. My A1c's have been consistent @ 6.2 for the last 7 years and I now only check my sugar once a week or occasionally if I don't feel "right".

I'm fortunate that our Canadian Health Care system allows me to afford the proper medications without breaking me financially.

Only drawback is some foot pain that can be a bit of a bear by the end of a gig but I can still get by.

Number please?

I have had type 2 since 96. Am currently on 1000mg a day of Metformin, but it still runs too high. I am attempting to get the diet under better control. I have kept off over 100 pounds for 6 1/2 years thanks to a gastric bypass, but still need to cut my weight down more.

@Thebaum92: I also hope you mean loving playing bass.

Well my Blood Sugar has been out of control for a while. I'm out of meds and really need to go back to see the doc. I just need to update and get a new set of labs done.

This disease really sucks. I can't stand it most of the time. I've tried changing my habits...one of the things I am going to do is take up biking. I just put a bike on lay-away. I plan to dedicate some time this summer to just riding. I hope to improve by dropping some weight.

(At 5'2"...77Kgs is NOT good.)

Wow, can't believe I've missed this thread. I'm in my 30s, and have had type I since I was 12.

Does anyone else find themselves repositioning their pump before they play to keep the electronic noise away from your pickups? :D

Pumps are WAY better than the way injections used to work (the modern lantis + fast acting insulin is a big improvement, too), but they do require a bit of care around magnetic pickups...

I do the multiple injections, but my doctor wants me to switch to the pump. Could you please give me your opinion on it.

Also diabetic. Have the problem on both sides of family. Grandmother died from the complications, dad diagnosed Type I at 62 years and has had amputations. Mom is, aunts, uncles and cousins are, grandfather was. Both Type I & II on both sides.

Diagnosed between Xmas & New Years 2002. Went to emergency room, not feeling well. First test showed glucose level of 1050, second test showed 1155, that's when I went into a coma. Was in coma from Saturday til Tuesday when I woke up. My doctor told me I should have died. Diagnosed first as Type II, then rediagnosed as Type I.5. Yep, I get the best of both worlds. Pancreas doesn't make enough, and body doesn't know how to use what's there. Currently Pancreas is getting worse, early first stages of Kidney failure, bad vision, and the cuts that don't heal for weeks. But, like everything else in life, you learn to live with it.

I'm type 1. Had it since 16. I'm 32 now.

Got mine through a pancreatic infection. My blood sugar got to 755 before I was admitted into the hospital for a week. Now I take 4 shots a day.

But hey, there's worse stuff you could get stricken with.

Oooh. Here's my doses.

40 lantus and 10 humalog in the morning.

10 humalog at suppertime.

10 more before I go to bed.

I should probably be on the pump. lol

But I haven't missed a shot in 16 years.

Got diagnosed with type 2 just this past February. Got the call literally the morning after my 41st birthday. In 3 months I dropped 15 lbs, and brought my a1c from 9.5 to 5.6. My Dr. called me a rockstar. Cut the metformin dose from 1000mg to 500mg/day. Hopefully when I go back in August I can get off it completely.

I've been lucky so far. Hopefully it'll continue!

That's awesome!!!

Sadly mine type 1 has gotten worse. My pancreas has officially given out and produces no insulin at all anymore, compared to the little it did. Last summer my A1c was about a 5.8. This past week I was tested ant it was 10.5!! My doctor is doing some major overhauling to my doses. I'm getting a patch next week that checks my blood sugars every 5 minutes. We'll see how it goes.

Hey man -
Good luck with everything. I hope it works out for you.

I dont have diabetes but I saw this film and watched people who did have it being cured.
Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days | Watch Free Documentary Online

These people were off all their meds (one guy 17 different meds) in just a few weeks.
No drugs can cure - only our bodies can and this film seems to prove it. Hope you guys will give it a try and be free from this disease once and for all!!! Peace and good health to you!

Type 2 here, 40 yo, 6' 280. Diagnosed about 2.5 years ago. Immediately lost 40 lbs and got it well under control. About a year ago, my job got crazy and I slowly started putting the weight back on, and my problems kicked up again. Stress, and stress eating, are a big problem for me. Just got a new job about a month ago and I have already lost 5 lbs, looking to loose 40 more. We'll see how it goes.

Ill take a number as well (if your giving them :))

Type 2 diabetic myself...was diagnosed type 1 at age 15, went on Insulin, declared diabetes free by age 19...REDIAGNOSED at age 27 due to stress and high weight gain, back on Insulin since 2008 :(

Im one of those Biggest Loser sized guys (450lbs to be exact) I know my lifestyle isint the
healthiest...ive cut back on drinking quite a bit (from drunk everyday to less than a drink or two twice a month) my vice unfortunately is the all powerful crunch of cheetoes and that I AM a darn good cook if I do say so myself (it's where I got the first part of my screename on the account I fry Catfish like nobodys business) but I owe it to my family,myself..and my bass :p to get healthy. My wife just underwent gastric bypass (got that way on account of my cooking) and I plan to go under the knife next year myself.Hopefully that with some excerise and faith, will cure it.

I'm in...

Type one since is was 18 (I'm 44 now). Been on a pump for about 3 years or so now. I've finally gotten the dosages right to where my sugars are normal about 95% of the time. In Stage Four of kidney failure, but most everything else is going ok.

To those of you who are diabetic and not checking your sugar or following directions, just let me say this. Through my 20s and 30s I felt I'd be ok. I didn't take it seriously. I still smoked a pack or so a day, drank a ton, and did some other not too healthy things. About three years ago I went to the hospital feeling like death warmed over with pneumonia, blood sugar of 855 and several other problems. That was a wake up call. I'm now living with the consequences of 20 years of not really living like I had the disease. I'd give everything I have to go back and get to live those years again and take care of myself. I'm 44 and hope I'll get to see my young son grow up, but with my health like it is I just dont know. So take the disease seriously, because it is. I'm looking at dialysis in probably a year or so.

But anyway...I deal with it on stage by making sure I check it before I play and I keep something handy to deal with it, usually some peanut butter crackers or something like that, but I'm usually just nervous enough and stressed that it is usually just a bit high when I play, so low sugars aren't really a problem when playing. Mostly just afterwards when taking everything down.

Hope I didn't sound "preachy", just want everybody to be as healthy as possible.
