That explains it.
Everything about that record makes me cringe, but even as a kid I thought Bruce was really hamming it up on that track - I'll give him some leeway from now on
(Talking of USA for Africa, there's that pretty offensive conspiracy theory that Stevie Wonder has been faking blindness all along - I don't have much patience with that kind of nonsense, but it isn't helped when there's footage of the "We are The World" recording session, and either Lionel Richie knows something we don't, or he's making an ass of himself in the heat of the moment, by sitting at a piano with Stevie, and pointing him to phrases in the sheet music).

I'm still a 70s punk at heart and thankfully where I grew up there was a plethora of alternative music and a vibrant underground scene that provided plenty of opportunities to escape mundane generic safety consumer friendly music.

Springsteen live in Europe. Lofgren's second solo, the whole thing just lifts off.
Often, songs written and recorded first tend to flesh out on the live dates. Like this one.

My buddy was a guitar tech(in N.J.) for Ramones. One time, he saw Bruce and invited him to a Sunday BBQ and gave him his #.....Bruce called him up that Sunday and respectfully declined his invite.... I forget what his excuse was, but my buddy was like, " Bruce called and cannot make it, what a guy, to actually call

I was a bit disappointed at the time with the album. I'd been a fan a few years by then, especially of his pre-Born In The USA work, which I wasn't too impressed with either...UNTIL I saw him live for the first time in Slane Castle.
Let's just say that I've seen him almost every tour he's done since then, sometimes several shows. Live he's never disappointed, even when his studio output has been somewhat inconsistent to me.
"Tougher...' and 'Spare Parts' are the only two tracks on the album I did really like at the time, but, while I own all his official output, and quite a few bootlegs, the only albums I still play regularly are his first 5. Maybe it's time I gave 'Tunnel' another go...
I will say I never thought of it as selling out...more trying to keep up with what was happening in popular music. Whether that was prompted by his own artistic drive or record company/management influence is the question, I guess.
Let's face it, how many acts do we know can keep producing truly excellent output consistently? I certainly can't think of any, certainly none with as long a career as Springsteen.

I was already a big fan of him with the e street band from Greetings from Asbury Park through Born in the USA. Saw them several times in Memphis, fantastic band and the most high energy performances I’ve ever seen. A band I was in at the time did a number of Springstten covers, and I always enjoyed playing them. Thunder Road was a particular favorite.
I liked this song, the band, and the album it came from, better than most all of Born in the USA.
Nebraska was way too stripped down and bleak for me, so I was really happy with this record when it came out.
This is the style we played, journeyed up to Clevo to play with these guys and Integrity at a Sunday morning hardcore matinee once. Caught Primus opening for 24-7 Spyze the same weekend. Don’t have any recordings of my band though.
Ultimately soured on hc. Ended up feeling too much like macho gang bull
. I much preferred Fugazi and their vibe in the end. 
Springsteen from *any* era is a hard pass for silly old me.
As for the '80s, there's not too much music from that decade that was ever to my liking.
