Did you know thread

Did you know that many of those "facts" are BS?

Did you know that these "facts" are also complete BS?

- People only use 10% of their brain
- Water spirals in opposite directions in the northern & southern hemispheres
- It takes time for police to "trace a call".
- No two snowflakes are the same.
- Turkey makes you sleepy
- The Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure visible from space
- A penny dropped from a skyscraper could kill someone.

Did you know?...Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

Did you know?...The word "****" is actually an acronym. It dates back to the Good Old Days, when England was severely underpopulated due to the usual combination of fire/war/plague, and the King issued an official order to... well, ****, to replenish the population. Hence the phrase "Fornicate Under Command of the King" passed into everyday language.

I call BS on these two.

Studies of numerous other primates clearly indicate they engage in sex for pleasure. It's almost certain that this would extend to other non-primate and non mammalian animals as well.

The origin of **** is most often assumed to be the German word ****en, which means "to strike" which itself is derived from ficken, meaning about the same thing.

Damn... my wife was right... I really AM doing it all wrong!!

My worthless trivia contribution:

The placenta is a disposable organ. If a woman is bleeding uncontrollably after giving birth, eating a piece of the placenta will stop the hemorrage.

:eyebrow:

also... given all this new knowledge... bedbugs REALLY freak me out now!!

The seahorse is the only living creature where the male gives birth!

More people are killed a year by falling coconuts than by sharks!

Ostriches do not stick their head in the sand!

You are more likely to get struck by lightning than to win the lottery!

In the average lifetime, a person will walk the equivalent of 5 times around the equator!

Coca-cola actually contained cocaine when first invented!

The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets!

Yeah, and although Snopes doesn't mention it, it followed on the heels of the success of "Vin Mariani" a Bordeaux wine made with coca leaves. Several people copied it, including the future creator of Coca cola. When state prohibition legislation hit Georgia (in the late 1800s), a non-alcoholic version of the drink was created - Coca Cola.

what i remember off hand, who knows how true some of it is...

an average person swallows an average of 7 spiders in their lifetime

here in SWFL, 12 inches of rain becomes only 1 inch on water added to the aquifer

human hair grows about 12 inches a year

it costs about $0.05-$0.10 to make a pack of cigarettes

it takes 8 minutes for sunlight to reach earth

google "lincoln and kennedy similarities"

you burn calories eating celery

I hate to sink into linguistics territory but, naw, I don't believe it's a borrowing from German. More likely a cognate (a reliable description of 'cognate' here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognate if anyone cares). Hell, it may well be older than the written word for Germanic languages so believing that it's an acronym is absurd.

- Turkey makes you sleepy
This ones not "complete" b.s. Turkey contains tryptophan which the body converts to serotonin. Serotonin is a major player in the sleep process. Bit its not like eating a turkey on rye is gonna hit you like a valium.

Tryptophan can be converted to seratonin (as well as niacin) but there's two things wrong with the turkey myth. One is that turkey doesn't contain much larger amounts of tryptophan than other poultry and it actually contains less per gram than say, chedder cheese. Secondly, in the absence of a carbohydrate heavy meal (like Thanksgiving) stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin which reduces other amino acids in the bloodstream which indirectly leads to tryptophan in the blood stream crossing the BBB and being converted to seratonin. Add to that alcohol and extra blood flow needed to digest a large meal and you get sleepy.

But eating turkey by itself will have no more of a reaction than eating chicken by itself would since they have nearly the same amount of tryptophan per gram.
