+1. When I get around to being a father, I plan to continue playing and I plan to sign them up for at least piano lessons.
I did that. Now my 21 yr old daughter plays piano and my 18 yr old daughter plays bass. They also steal my CDs, but I don't mind. I just love seeing it passed down the line. Makes me feel like part of a continuum.
My dad say's he Played Steel Guitar back in the day but I've never seen him play, so it must have been when he was a teenager. Music doesn't seem to run in my Family on either side, however, my sister Plays Guitar as well... Kind of strange actually. 
Neither of my parents played an instrument when I was growing up (though recently my mom took up clarinet and piano), but they both were dancers heavily involved in musical theater...I suspect that had something to do with my early interests.
Yeah. My dad worked his way through college in the 40's playing sax and clarinet in a swing band among other things. I never heard him play, but they gigged a lot of the same venues that major acts like Goodman and the Dorsey brothers played when they were in town, so I imagine they must have been pretty good.

No. I'm the first person in my family that took the music path (lots of frustrated musicians on mom's branch, though).
My Dad took piano lessons when he was young but has really played in 40+ years, and he also dabled on guitar while in college. My mom hasn't ever played an instrument in her life. They saw fit to get me an alto sax when I was in fourth grade...BOOM, I have been hooked on music ever since.
Just about everyone on my dads side plays an instrument or three (mostly guitar). my cousin on that side is also a bass player. My mom played some flute in high school, buty all she knew was a couple of Jethro Tull tunes. My parents where much more into listening to music than playing it.
My Dad played folk guitar until I took it up and he donated his guitar to me.
My mum cant play a note, but her four brothers all played piano, some of them could play by ear on the spot. One of them also played trumpet with Glenn Miller.
that might have something to do with me trying to play trumpet as well as bass (though not very well....)

Can't find one root or sapling in the family tree, not a grandparent, cousin, or youngblood that has even picked up an instrument for more then a few notes, much less owns one. Absolutely a lone ranger in that regard.
After some phone calls I did find the exception, married in Great grandmother Nadine 'tore the banjo up like it was nobody business well into her 80's so the legend goes.

Nope. My mother always wonders how I turned out a musician.
But though my dad couldn't carry a tune in a cart, mom sang all the time, and we constantly had music playing in the house - she'd load up those old record changers with 4 LP's and they'd play through. So I was surrounded by music, just not by musicians.

I'm the first musician in my family at all as far as I know.
I played the flute for several years from about age 9 and Bass for 2 and a half now.
My dad once told me that his friends once talked about starting a band in the 70s and if they had of done, he'd have played bass, but that's about the closest I get!
I actually really would have liked a musicial upbringing as some of you have had, I might have been able to get started earlier. Maybe I can do that for any children I might have in the future.
However the guitarist in my band also fronts a band with his Dad on the drums, and has been doing so for about 4 years (We're both 17)

my dad is a singer, keyboard player & guitar player. When I was in high school I would sit in on gigs his band played. Was a lot of fun.
