It is impossible to have 90 songs learned and gig/audition ready in 6 weeks.

blue, you might want to find some other forum to play fake expert at.. Your opinions here are mocked for a reason. There are players here that are leagues beyond me and I just learned over 150 songs in the last 3 weeks for a gig with a new band and I've got another 50 to go for a sub gig next month.. All that's while working a full-time daygig as a graphic designer. I could easily double that if working at it full-time. Here's a piece of advice, don't presume to speak for anyone else as you obviously are not up to par and have no idea what you're talking about..

I occasionally play with band that has approximately 35-members. Only 5 at a time, though. There are dozens of different songs, of any genre except metal, classical, and opera. The group (always fronted by the same two guys) have never held a rehearsal in the life of the band. It's a darn good band too , in fairly constant demand. We/they pride themselves on being able to play a verse and chorus of any song the crowd names.

Sometimes the bass comes in on the second verse. Sometimes the bass sits a bit low in the mix. Sometimes the bass uses some savvy to work around a flub. Sometimes the bass absolutely rocks.

I keep a little list going so I can jot down titles that need later study.

Some folks are real naturals at this kind of situation. I have to work my butt off to get by but I'm still get the odd call from them.

I've played gigs like that where folks are hired, and they come and go. Usually, though, we were reading (jazz combo gigs or big band gigs, theater orchestra gigs). Sitting in with a non-reading band can be tricky.

I read the thread. Bassman 134 I hope you kill it this weekend. We have a band around here that has a A and B team. I know what your talking about. Are they looking to get a solid B team bassist or are you hoping to make the A team? Kudo's on learning the tunes. Depending on what they are it may have been a tall order for me. I respect those guys that can tear it up so easily. If you get what you want then it doesn't matter what the rest of us think. Be true to yourself and good luck.

They didn't tell the fill in (guy helping them out) bass player the right time to be at the gig

It was an Honest mistake, and I was apologized to and I did make it then more or less in time. I did rush out of the house because of it, to find my ear plugs were in another bag.

They gave you a list of 90 songs to learn cold in 6 weeks

I told them, I had a good handle on the material. I fully knew I'd have to work my ass off for it, but the payoff would be worth it, even if , as others have mentioned, I increased my personal repitoire. Also, I was told it was cool to have a music stand with as many notes as I wanted. Also, we didn't PLAY 90 songs that night, we did 40(a normal 3 sets), but the entire list is fair game. Again I walked into this knowing that, there were no surprises.

They gave you no respect for the time you put into their band
I had a 1/2 hour talk with the leader, and he thanked me for coming down and learning the stuff, he was very nice about it. We also kept the conversation going, which is why I think I got another chance after we talked about the sound issues (and the two songs that were listed in the wrong key, apology again btw). all in all I could have just gotten an email saying, no thanks.


They didn't test you out before playing to customers.
They did, in my OP I said they had me sit in at a gig with my choice of 3 songs from their list. While I was up there, he had me pick 4 more.

Then they dropped you with a lame excuse about vocals.

Yea, it kind of started like that and I think there was more to it, I think he didn't want to pile on the other issues I had. I mean if you heard the 3 or 4 songs I messed up you think I was playing deaf and blind folded, they were that bad, and I was embarrassed.

I haven't played in a cover band in 20years that didn't have some kind of quirks to it.Its a good money gig, they play really good places, to good crowds of people( lots of perty girls too,lol) The band I am leaving, wasn't. Booking gigs was a stress out. 10 people would show up AND there was more drama than you could imagine. Even as a fill-in guy once a month this is a better gig by far...

I guess that would all make sense AfroCuban, but here is the thing and it's something you will understand.

First of all I don't beleive you, I don't believe you just learned 150 songs inside out over the last 3 weeks or have another 50 to go.

And it's all fair, just as you don't believe anything about me or the caliber of my band.

So we are sort of even.

I don't think you have any idea of what your talking about and you feel the same way about me.

I think the guys I am trying out for are getting a bad rap from a few of you. I put myself in a near impossible situation, no one forced me or misrepresented me into doing what I did.

A week from Friday- May 6th.

I have my last gig with my old band this weekend, not looking forward to it, there's a lot of sour grapes on me quiting. I could start another whole thread on that nonsense.

man six weeks is a REAL long time to learn 90 songs. i've done 3 bands at the same time with a total of over 30+ originals each (not covers mind you), and was very successful. i was with one band and then had to learn 60+ in less than two weeks to be able to do what i was doing, BECAUSE I WANTED TO DO IT.. so your argument is kinda up in the air. covers??? i mean c'mon if it's radio stuff and you properly prepare, that shouldn't be hard at all. originals with 3 bands of 3 completely different styles.. now that's a challenge. i appreciate your argument for people with less experience, but you are way off.

It was hard work, but I did it.

I made my point. It was such a simple thing really. It should not have been so hard for everyone.

Another thing that came out of this was we all have different definitions for stuff.

Learning songs as oposed to performing them live was a good example. The 2 are quite differrent.

I still don't think everyone understands the premise or parameters of my position. Well, except for a few of you that sent PMs.

I am sure you did learn and I stress learn 90 songs.

But you will never convince me that you played 90 new songs live for the first time without rehearsing with that band without making several mistakes.
