Difference between precision bass and jazz bass

Not to pick on you in particular :) but Larry Graham has foot long fingers and seems to get along on a Jazz just fine. I know for sure that playing the same thing on both my jazz and p, it's easier on the jazz, but whatever. I think playing well and getting along with people are way more important than jazz vs p. I like the jazz sound better for worship, but a buzz can be distracting in church. Used Ibanez sr505 might be hard to beat in the value department, but I like fenders (safe choice).
Personal experience as a beginner, not a blanket statement; I've got two Jazz's and a P and still find the P more comfortable (even the really wide custom shops and AVRI P's are nice for me). And I'll wager that Larry Graham could out funk us both with a bit of twine strung between a broomstick and a bucket. :)

Excellent. Reading through the replies I was going to suggest a 5 string too. I started on a 4 (granted it was a gift) but one thing that hindered my learning was that most of the music I was learning had notes that weren't on my bass. 99% of the time you shouldn't have that problem.

Just wanted to thank everyone for contributing with their opinions and experiences and also answering my questions. I have decided on a Bass. A 5-stringer !! Ibanez model # GSR205SMNGT. I am super stoaked ! Cant wait to get and start playing it !! Thank you all so much !!

Best regards and Bass on !!!

Gotta love Ibanez for their clear and concise model names :roflmao: I had to look up what it is.
Ibanez is an excellent choice though, not just for beginners !
You might wanna order some new strings while you are at it, the stock strings are often not that great.

That said, congratulations on your new axe, enjoy it !

Here is another video to get you started:

Have fun ! :bassist:

Great news ! And rather funny too. I was following this thread with attention, as I'm also starting from scratch. And guess what, I also went for a 5 string I found locally, a barely used Yamaha TRBX305. Voilà. No excuse anymore, lets start ... picking.

Thanks to all of you.

Good on you.

Just reading the thread and I doubt many people starting bass know what sound to look for much less like.

Get a reasonable instrument, learn to play. Listen to tracks you like and see if you can get that sound. At some point you will probably up the ante and get into more expensive instruments, but not definitively. My $300 1967 Guild Starfire puts out a sound not mant basses can match. Of course, so does my much more expensive Fodera Monarch. It is all about what you, and your group like. You will have a much better idea in 5 - 10 years what you want. Until then have fun and experiment.
