Differences between Hybrid with carved front vs carved back?

Discussion in 'Basses [DB]' started by truckplayer, Apr 23, 2019.

  1. I enjoy checking out websites and learned that hybrids come with either a carved front or back. I assumed they were all carved fronts. What are the differences between a hybrid with a carved front vs a hybrid with a carved back? Is one design better for certain tones, resonance, etc? Is one design more popular than another? Thanks!

What is commonly called a "hybrid" will have a carved top. The back will always be ply, and the ribs could be either, but most often ply as well.

I have not come across a bass that was purposely built with a ply top, but solid wood back.

Somebody (I forget who) is doing "hybrids" with BOTH carved fronts and backs and only laminated sides.
