Differences in sound between Sadowsky and Mike Lull?

Nice sound Clips! Adrian. :D I really appreciate your input because this is the first time that I can listen both Sadowsky's and Lull's bass at once and compare them.

My Answer is..
#1 = Lull
#2 = Sadowsky
#3 = Lull
#4 = Sadowsky

Pm me the answer if you can! For the fingering style clips, it is difficult to guess!! :)

I'd pick an MTD 535. :D

Nah, seriously, I think I would go with the Lull The ONLY reason is I could save about $1000 and choose my pups/pre. I think the basses are equals in everything that matters and most things that don't. Actually I will have one of each in the collection again eventually, but first comes the MTD.

i prefer the tone of all Ash, and i am not sure how much a maple top will change that, but with trans black... i hope Ash will look good- i think i still have time since the body has to go to paint.
DiMarzio Ultra J's - not sure what pre... maybe a good old bart pre, the Aggie obp3 is a little hissy in the treble for me.. maybe ill do something crazy and go with a greengrove pre

Adrian, you can check a transblack Lull Invalid Link Removed where you can take a better look to the transblack ash. Scroll down to the first 5 string. (The top is maple but the back is a good example of what you're after)

Ben, they went straight into my Protools Digi 001. No added eq other than the onboard pre on the basses. Thanks, i really think i could have made the basses sound "better' with a little added eq, but we wanted to hear the bass, not my protools plug ins... ;)

ok, you guys ready for the answers? a couple of people got it right. Impressive, i don't now that i could have.

i had a trans black here ( i posted a pic of it earlier in the thread ) with an ash body-

and if the body is not bookmatched or at least has a consistent grain, it can look a little odd. I spoke to Mike Lull and he tells me he thinks i will be fine with it, it is now away in finish , so we'll see..
I am going to have to force myself to afford both the Sad Tokyo and Lull because i honestly feel they do bring different flavors to the table. I like them both enough to keep one of each. Trouble is , they are both black!
So now I am wondering what the grain under the Sad looks like, because a trans white refinish would make those pearloid blocks look awesome. My Gassy mind never stops with the foolishness...

Aer you gonna dish on which Sound clip was which bass? PM me if you want to let it ride for a bit. And yeah, a transwhite finish on your Sadowsky with the White Block inlays would be cool!

ok, i'll spill it.
Jared Morante ( after listening further ) and Jugghaid had it right.

Slap1 Sadowsky
Slap2 Lull

Finger1 Lull
Finger2 Sadowsky

i tried to eq the onboard pre's on the basses as closely as possible so that there would not be a huge, obvious difference. My observation is that both are fantastic basses and have their strong points- the Sadowsky Tokyo, with it's single coils had a lo mid presence that is very pleasing- also, it is hevaier than the Lull, and i think you can hear that in the bark- but on the other hand, the Lull , for as light and comfy as it is, sounds like a heavier bass. The added versatility of the 3 band pre is nice. As i said before, i will do what i can to afford both the Lull and keep the Sadowsky- i have a loaner Metro with Sadowsky humcancelling J's and NYC pre that is on the way so i can check out the differences there ( thanks Hman! )
so there you have it.... which one did you guys like better- and kudos to Jared and Jugghaid for getting it right.

Well... at least I guessed that #1 and #4 are the same bass and #2 and #3 are the same bass.

I just erred on which bass is which.

I'm surprised because I heard tighter lows on #1 and #4 so I assumed they were from a 35" scale instrument.

Very interesting.

Favorites:

Sadowsky for slap - clip # 1
Lull for finger - clip # 3

Yeah, But the problem is with Adrian playing them a Squire Singapore would sound Fantastic. What we need is to have a weekend "hacker" like me playing them! :D I can see it now "Bass-testers for Dummies" And now the bass line to "Should I stay or should I go" on a $10,000 Ritter. :p For the record I will be interested to hear the clips with the Metro and the NYC, because my understanding is they sound fuller. I am amazed by how "round" my Ash/maple NYC sounds. So I guess you'll have to have four basses in the shootout next time AG. It's always a pleasure to hear you play, hopefully your "world tour" will hit motown someday I'd love to meet "the man in real life.
