I would think the extra string would be enough of a visual clue to tell you that it's not the E string. But I don't play a 5-string, so that's probably why I fail to see why this is a problem for some.

Forget the crutches... just play the bass regularly and get used to having the extra srting. It's not that hard.
What worked for me was to put my fours down and concentrate on fiver exclusively. I wound up switching to fiver exclusively, but even if you don't, just leave your fours alone until you get comfy on five.
I would also recommend learning some new songs on five. That way you'll get to know your new instrument without being distracted by "muscle memory" that comes from playing songs you've played for years on four string.
I appreciate the comments, but I've been playing for 20 years, the last 10 or so with a 5er some of the time. I can do it, but I just like 4 strings more for really rocking out. I've used Cirrus 5 strings many times, but the extra next girth just keeps me coming back to the Millenniums. I have smallish hands too. I guess I'll just stick to the 5 and get on with it. I was really just seeing if anyone else has done the dark 5th string, or if it's as odd as it sounds.
I think that's a really great idea. I'm a 4 banger player, so I think something like that would help me jump to the 5er.
