Different color steel string?

A set of DR Hi Beams just came in the mail today, I put them on my bass and after a while notice that the A string is totally a different color than the rest of the strings. It's as if the A string is grey and the rest of the set is silver. Has anyone experienced this?

The tone sounds consistent with the rest of the strings so I don't think it's accidentally a different material somehow.

I've seen it before. Hopefully the strings all wear evenly and that one doesn't do anything offbeat with the rest.

I was once installing a set of Ernie Ball Stainless Steel Slinkies on a bass that belongs to my church, and noticed the E string was a bit darker than the rest. I wasn't too concerned as it didn't seem to affect the tonal quality and consistency with the rest.

I've also noticed stainless steel rounds come in different shades of grey depending on the manufacturer. For example, the DR SS Lo-Riders I once had were lighter in color than the GHS Super Steels.

Old thread, but I google this issue and I had this pop up. This happen with my recent set of high beams. Doesn't really affect anything but looks off but no big deal. It's my E string that is slightly darker.

The last post was only a little over a month ago. I would consider that fairly current. I've seen a few threads from 15-20 yrs ago being brought back to life.

Haha true, I always say that just incase you get the wise guy "wow old thread" I did review a martial arts thread from 4 years ago, no one complain but I always am cautious

Some threads tend to age gracefully, while others die off very quickly... Come to think of it, they're just like bass strings we talk about.

Just had this occurrence with my high beams. The G string also has a white ball end color while the rest are gold/brass. I write DR about just out of curiosity. Ill see what they say.

That’s super odd as I don’t believe they make a string that has any colored ball ends (?)

I heard back from DR and the different wire is due to supplies bought during the pandemic. Same with the ball end. Just alternate sources but they sound the same so it’s no problem.
