Is a 250K or 500k pot universal, or do i have to buy 500k bass pots or 500k guitar pots,etc.

250K or 500k thats the question:
250K's will give a slightly warmer tone than the 500K's, so if you like less highs this is the one to go with.
500K are brighter and some think it give a little better punch if you like the highs.
So really the choice is more of a personal pref.
But if you have 500k's there is nothing that say's you can't place a 250k in its place but just be aware that you are giving up some of your brighter or high frequencies.

Yes they are universal for the most (99%) part.
What you need to know is that you need to get one with an audio taper.
