Different tone from different wood, really?

You mentioned "it wasn't the strings ... did you change both sets of strings to the same exact new identical sets on both basses the very same day as your test? With all things being equal, even a set of same type/size strings a week older can make a noticeable difference in sound.
I took the set off one bass and put it on the other, and vice versa.

Better is subjective.
Yah - I corrected that in a later post saying that I liked it more, not that it was better. The point was that the quality of one bass I particularly liked did not migrate to the other bass when I swapped pickups, bridge and strings between the two basses.
 
How is replying “Much Science”, or “Sounds like paint matters” not condescending? Not to mention the ad hominem styled attacks. You replied disrespectfully, you get a response in the style you create. It amazes me how people feel shocked when it happens, then see no fault in their own actions as a catalyst to the scenario at hand.

And, yes, if you hug an acoustic you will change it’s tone. The finish on a poly bass is thick, very thick. It chokes the wood. Why do drummers put tape/foam, etc. on a drum? To change its tone. The tape hinders the vibrations, it chokes it. Removing the finish changed the tone of the bass. But, that’s not the point I was making.

Density affects vibration (sound in water for example), so how does paint not affect the wood it is applied on? It chokes it. How is this not understood, by you though, to translate to wood density affecting tone, the point I was trying to make, that tone woods must matter because they are of different densities? Has nothing to do with the paint. The paint was simply my revelation that structure does matter.

Put your hand on a metal bar, hit it with a drum stick. Take your hand off, hit it with a drum stick. You are essentially arguing, for the obvious sake of arguing, that this isn’t true. Your comments seem trollish because you need clarification on simple concepts, but you do so in a way that sees yourself as elite in thought whereas others are subversive, generally lacking in respect.

And, paper weights are useful. You just can’t figure out what use that is. Big shock.

Paint will not change the density of the wood, but rather the overall average density of the body. The sound waves within the wood will tend to reflect from discontinuties, and paint won't change that. However the paint isn't capable of absorbing large amounts of energy like holding something as it has very little mass.

The other issue is that the energy available to be transferred is small. If you take a body and bow it (I have a bow and a plywood body but I don't want to mess up my new strat body) the sound emanating from the body acoustically on a solid body instrument is pretty much inaudible. So even if paint could absorb the energy there's little to absorb at the boundary.

It's very different with an acoustic instrument that is made of thin plates of material and a resonating cavity. But then the fact that energy from the string us more audible is why a DB's sustain is so much shorter.
