Hey everyone, I am (as mentioned in a previous thread) looking to upgrade my string bass. But with Upton I am aloud to pick my own varnish. Now I'm thinking to myself well... I just want it to look good, and stand out but not too much, I don't want to stand out completely and grab too much attention to the bass during like an orchestral setting, (like getting a white bass even though they look pretty cool). ANYWAY is there any sites that I could look at and see a general spectra of varnish blends. I know every varnish is pretty much custom but it would be nice if i could see some color pallets or something.

It appears that Upton is constantly improving its finishes. The basses just seem to look nicer and nicer.
When I bought my Upton I just began looking at basses on various sites like Upton, Lemur and on TB. When I found one I liked, I emailed a link to Upton. This was only to give them a general range. Beyond that, I trusted them to use their best judgement.
Keep in mind that the bass is just a tool. The beauty of it is in the music you make with it.

Thanks alot, I've been looking around. I really like the color tone of Edgar Meyer's bass, its very simple, yet unique because alot of people have redish basses or dark basses or if you have a lighter bass it's usually really light like those white upton basses for swing.

I like it too. Just talk to Upton. They MAY be able to get close, but remember that his bass has a lot of years on it. Age may be hard to duplicate.
Yeah they said if I wanted that aged look it would have to cost an extra couple hundred dollars but they could easily get the tone of color. I'll probably just age it myself, unless my parents decide to be nice and cough up the extra couple hundred (75% I'm paying but my parents are covering the rest for a graduation present) so we'll see. I like the way the edges are kind of dark, they said they can reproduce that too. But I'm not trying to pretend to be like a wanna be Edgar Meyer (although he is like a god among basses) I just really like his bass.
