I play with both pick and finger, about equally fluently. As for difficulty, I find that fingering allows for easier muting of unplayed strings, while picking allows for easier palm-muted pizzicato.
I like to use regular, medium-heavy guitar picks made of nylon or celluloid. They give my notes a defined attack with rich harmonics. When I want it mellower, there's the tone knob and there're my fingertips.
