The "audience" argument is used to evaluate how much a piece of gear tonally affects the end result, but sometimes fails to take into account the influence of said piece of gear on the player himself, and thus on the performance as a whole.
If it makes no or little difference to the player, the audience won't notice a thing, for sure, but the opposite is also true.
