I'm in a bit of a bind here. I've recently bought a jazz bass, but I've discovered I prefer the sound of precision basses. Are there any J-Bass shaped Precision pickups?

People will tell you only a P sounds like a P, but all P's don't sound alike...

If you want to hang onto your Jazz you could install a P pickup...you'd need routing and another pickguard or surround. If you prefer the Jazz neck it's not a bad idea. P and J necks differ a lot, so that should also be a consideration.

Right, and I would normally go for an SX or Brice P bass, but from what I've seen, they only have jazz.

Though, I'll look into installing the P pickup.

I'm pretty sure SX has P's and P/J's, maybe they're out of stock. They're usually on ebay.

If you like the playability and unplugged tone of the bass, there's a neat option you can pursue:

If it's a Jazz with a pickguard, go ahead and get the body routed for the P pickup and a appropriate pickguard for it. I would imagine that there are places out there selling J-with-P-pickup pickguards out there. Even if not, it's an easy job for a tech, or for you if you have the shop skills.

Then you'll have a PJ, which is a great, versatile instrument. Everything a precision has, plus the famous bridge pickup sound of a jazz.
