Thats why I said shallow. And at an angle. Like a wedge. It takes VERY little to get your strings close-and you shouldnt have to adjust your saddles up at all.

Ok, I'll give it a shot and see where it gets me. The combination of shimming and lowering the poles might just be enough. I'll update the thread with results.
Can I be a member? Here's my new/old stock set of Dimarzios on my SX SPJ-62..pickgaurd is rough, but wow...what a difference from the stock ones!
I remember when I was taking apart my friend's Charvel guitar, there was a piece of a credit card that sat between the two neck bolts closest to the bridge and the heel of the neck pocket. It tilted the neck back at the pefrect angle.

As an update to my query (sorry, in hindsight this may not have been the best place for it, but I did get good help so...).
I removed the bridge pup, repaired the stripped screw holes, and removed the ground screw at the bottom of the cavity. That screw was eating up a couple mm of much needed clearance. I extended the ground wire into the control cavity and soldered it on with the rest of the grounds. I trimmed the coils of black and white wire under the pup too. re-assembled, found stripped neck screws, fixed with glue and sawdust mix, re-assy again with 5 thicknesses of business card tapered in a wedge - way too much, dropped to 3 thicknesses, still too much, removed all together and it came out ok. Seems with the tight fretboard radius if I shim to lower action on the G I stretch the limits of saddle height on A & D.
In short, the setup is good now, decent compromise on action and poles far enough away from strings to sound good. Still some imbalance from bridge to neck but I think I can tweak most of that out, but it's kind of cool to get that boosted snarl as I blend in the bridge pup, so no worries if it doesn't balance perfectly.
Man, this thing sounds sweet, but I'm wondering where most of the tone is coming from, the Dimarzio Model J pups or the Audere pre. Has anyone here added one, then the other? Just curious, it really doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it's there!

I just bought a used Squire JAG VM SS that has DiMarzio pups.
I believe the P is a DP127 and the J is a DP123.
I guess I won't get to experience the improvement for myself? Oh well.
I just ordered a set of Roto flats to put on it.
Now I just need to learn to play the darn thing.

Dimarzio 122 on my pink Frankenfender. I love these pickups and they are my second favorite overall. They are just slightly edged out by my Darkstar, but they come damn close.
Forgot this club existed, my old basses are gone but I replaced them with this one.

1980 Model P, newer Model J with a 4 way "Tele" switch that allows a series combination. I had the mod P in my '65 Fender way way back, boy am I glad that was reversible. Not that it didn't sound awesome then, it did, but of course the orig '65 sounds pretty good too! After some time in a Squier Dual P, the DM Mod P has found it's new home, my Franken blues-rock P/J w/flats. This is the 3rd, and by far the best, pickup combination this bass has seen.

There's something about saying "Dimarzio pickups" that reminds me about every bad thing about the Seventies. It's totally illogical but there it is.
I am a former member of the DiMarzio club, from the founding days of DiMarzio: way back when, in 1981, when I had a 1975 Fender Jazz Bass, one of its pickups died. Back then, you couldn't get a factory replacement part. And the aftermarket was in its infancy. The only replacement available was a set of DiMarzio original "Patent Applied For" Model J pickups, which were first manufactured in 1979, and were just coming into their own. I bought a set and installed them. WOW!!! More grind, more growl, more push, better for rocking out, and...wonder of wonders for the time...HUMBUCKING!!! (split coil design) I played the life out of the bass until I wore out the frets and there was nobody available to re-fret, and so I sold it. It's OK. I know where the bass is. It still has the same set of pickups in it. I can borrow it anytime I get nostalgic for it, or need that tone for a session.
NOTE: the first Model J's had, like the original J-bass pickups, @ 7+ kohms' worth of wire on them. The new DiMarzio Model J's have a little less than that. Mine really, really growled. I don't like the newer ones.

With the DiMarzio's as well as with hot Seymor Duncan's, when I want a cleaner tone I often have the output Vol rolled off up to 1/4 turn. Full on it will bring the growl, I guess it depends on the type of music and the attitude I'm in.
