Finally took a pic of my two, a Model P and one with J's, On the J the creme one is one of the oldest, a PAF, and definitely sounds slightly 'bigger' and 'deeper' in tone so it went in the neck position. Both basses can get a great range of sound between the tone knob and plucking position, the one thing I love most about Dimarzio pickups is the sensitivity to dynamics.

What kind of bass is that with the Model P? Looks like there isn't quite enough room for the Kahler...but it works anyway! Awesome.

I'll bet that Jazz bass sounds incredible! I've heard that the old Model Ps sound more like the Will Power P compared to the ones currently in production--raunchier, with more mids.

Well the P is a parts build, and thats not a kahler
Its a massive string-thru bridge I got for 35 bucks on ebay, but even though I had measurements, the saddles on those pieces are so close to the neck that despite having the holes in the bridge lined up with the string ferrules in the body, I had to pull the saddles as far back as possible to get it properly intonated. The body was supposedly a Memphis (beautiful but weighs a ton!), neck is a blank fender replacement, and it's wired with a series parallel switch and tone knob, no volume. It's a beast, but weighs the same as my T-40, good thing for that 3.5" leather strap.

So, would it be possible for someone to compare DiMarzio Model J's to Fender's Mod Shop Samarium Cobalts?
I've installed the SC's and they seemed to have sucked the growl right out of the signal that even the stock pup's had. Will the DiMarzio's rectify this matter? And if so, which set would one be inclined to go with? Model J's or Ultra Jazz's?
I play in a Metal/Punk/Rock band and my signal is almost ALWAYS distorted by way of my Russian Big Muff.

Joey : I may be new to this forum. I am an old London punk. My guvnor bass is a '73 precision brutally modded.In 1980 I installed the best I knew.Mod P and rout hole for mod J.Then when 'Marzio introduced the ultras I HAD to put one next to the J on the Baddass bridge side.So, if you like ,I have old skool and clever clever modern.No worries coz Di Marzio is what makes the attack and sheer personality that delivers the goods...my goods.It is immpossible to try all pups unless you are minted.These Fender cobalts are unknown to me.The ultras are more thoughtful.. arty even.The rock solid style Mod P/J is your "lets get down and proper busy...clank,grind,hard,think...but soooo tasty....what more can I say.In hardcore talk:the ultra Jazz is standard Hi-Fi with the loudness control ON...which means mid scoop ,bottom and top NORMAL ...But with an extra bit of GLASSY high IF YOU CHOOSE to let it through your amp.The mod P/J is perfect STANDARD precision/jazz with extra PUNCH and a slightly bigger attitude in the mid and top.AND I MEAN slightly...but like I said :you get to choose the EQ on your amp.I think the mod J has more bang/grunt factor tonally.ALL of these pups can be wired series or parallel .Series=bigger less upper trebble.Para=less output but bit more high hi.NEVER stop playing...'ave IT !!

Heeey! I have Fender Precion... couple of months ago I put Kahler tremolo on it. And I am going to put X2N on it... and now I see you did the same!!! Do you have any sound clips of that p-bass? I would love to know, how it sounds before doing that mod. Thanks a lot!

Ok, finally got arounf to taking some pics of my Squire VMF with the DiMarzio AreaJ pickups. Much nicer than the standard Duncan designed pickups, and to my ear heaps better than the Bartolini's I tried.

And yes, that's a bit of extraneous copper sheilding tape on the neck pickup. I'll get round to cleaning that up at some stage. It's only really visable at close range or on photos

Nice! I'm really curious about them. If I had a J/J bass, I'd really want to try out a set.

From all accounts they are very similar to Nordstrands though I cannot attest to that personally, just going by what others have said.

As far as the wiring is concerned , I have push/pull pots on the two volume controls which switch between serial/parallel wiring on the pickups. This provides you with a quite wide tone range. All in all extremely happy though in hindsight I think the combined cost of the pickups and the BaddAssII bridge is probably more than I paid for the Squire!

Had a look on DiMarzio's website and downloaded their pickup pdf but I couldn't find mention of the pickups you mention. The only use of the term "vintage" was in relation to some 6str guitar pickups, not basses. They do sound like they may be a custom pickup specifically built for Fender. Have you tried e-mailing their tech support address [email protected]? They may be able to provide some information on these pickups for you.

Here's my 95 Charvel CHS-4. I installed the Model PJ pups a couple years ago and this thing rocks. I installed push/pull pots for Series/Parallel switching of each pup. It was my first bass and I didn't play it for almost 10 years. With the pups and new tuners, she is a great rock bass with killer tone.

I got the answer from DiMarzio Customer Service. These PUs are not made by DiMarzio, but by Gotoh as a result of a colaboration between Fender Japan and DiMarzio. Fender Japan had some examples made by different manufacturers and DiMarzio decided what to give their name for.

So i think i do not really qualify for the club, but at least contributed a good story.

I am thinking about putting a p/j -set of real DiMarzios on my aerodyne Jazz Bass. I want it to sound really big. Any suggestions on the best match?

Go for it! DiMarzios are a good place to look for big tone.

For the P pickup, anything will do. All of their P pickups are pretty monstrous, it just depends on what you want. The Will Power P will probably sound bigger than a Model P, but the Model P is already a pretty beefy pickup. The Split P has more output than the Model P and the Will Power P, but it'll sound very different and you'll have slightly different wiring options due to the dual humbucker design. I've never tried the Will Power P, but I've heard it described as sounding more like the vintage Model P pickups than the current Model P (more pronounced midrange and deeper lows).

As for the J pickups, it also depends on what you want. The Model J is a stellar pickup with a chopped treble sound that compliments the Model P really well, but the Ultra Jazz might be more your thing. I expect that they both sound really "big", but in different ways. I've never tried an Ultra Jazz, so I couldn't tell you firsthand what they sound like.

That sounds awesome, man. I've got my Ibanez Roadster strung with chromes and it sounds a lot like that due to the Ibanez "Super P4/J4" pickups (DiMarzio knockoffs). I love it. I might give that varitone circuit a try on one of my DiMarzio-loaded basses someday.

I might give that varitone circuit a try on one of my DiMarzio-loaded basses someday.

It's simple and uses only a few $$ worth of parts - and is totally reversible if you don't like it.
