It's still in bits & the pickguard needs a *lot* of work, but I have an Ultrajazz for the bridge and a Bill Lawrence EB50PB twin rails humbucker for the mid position. Both will be hard-wired in series mode.

When the weather gets warm enough for me to spend time in the workshop I'll put it together & do pics.

The sound is full, deep (good low) and crispy/clear if you turn up the tone, pretty heavy. It gets the body tone.
I guess they're discontinued because they're not mentioned on DiMarzio's
website.

Just saw on the website that the G's are no longer available, but that the X2N-Bs are available from their custom shop. I'd be curious to know more about them... They look like they have the same feature (adjustable pole pieces...and roughly EBO size) as the Model 1s

So, would it be possible for someone to compare DiMarzio Model J's to Fender's Mod Shop Samarium Cobalts?
I've installed the SC's and they seemed to have sucked the growl right out of the signal that even the stock pup's had. Will the DiMarzio's rectify this matter? And if so, which set would one be inclined to go with? Model J's or Ultra Jazz's?
I play in a Metal/Punk/Rock band and my signal is almost ALWAYS distorted by way of my Russian Big Muff.

You could try a few different conductor/capacitors on the tone
pot(s) before changing the pickup. 0.033 mF or 0.047 mF are generally
used for bass pots (0.047 for middle/neck, 0.033 for bridge), 0.022
is sometimes used with 250k pots (more-often with guitar humbuckers),
the 0.33 & 0.47 ones are used on 250 & 500 k tonepots.
Capacitors are a lot cheaper than pickups.

Hi guys! Let me start by saying that the only thing I learned how to do on a bass is play one (and change the strings). So I apologize if I sound ignorant. I realize that I could start a new thread for this question (and I may), but since there is a DiMarzio club, I figured that maybe you guys could help me.

I own a Yamaha Attitude bass, and would like to have some modding done to it. The Attitude, as you may know, has 2 pups. A woofer right up at the neck, and a p in the usual p position. It has dual input jack so that you can run the pups through separate amps.

Now, what I want to do is remove the neck pup, leave in the p pup, and basically have it wired up like a p bass. With a volume knob and a tone knob for the p pup.

The big thing I'm wondering is: Since the p pup on the Attitude only has a volume knob (set so the tone is all the way up all of the time), can I have a tone knob wired into it? It's a great pup, but with only one, I need a tone knob.

1st, Why would you wanna do that? You can turn the volume of the neck pickup down, it'll save you some hassle.

2nd, if you put a tone pot in, you'll lose some output and gain some tonal variety. The tone can be adjusted through your amp or an equalizer pedal, so it's not an absolute necessity.
You're better off modding a normal P-bass and leave the Yamaha the way it is. You can have as many tone & volume pots in as you like,
add a blender and some active circuitry, at the end of the day you might be happier with an original Yamaha. (a friend has a hollowbody 12 string guitar with DiMarzio humbuckers that run through 7 pots, but he's not happy with the output)

Well, I'm not particularly fond of how the neck pup sounds, but the main reason I want it gone is the fact that it's in the way.

As far as output goes, the p pup is pretty darn hot, and I have a volume knob on my amp.

The ATT-LTD is far better that any P bass I've ever played (subjective). Feels good, plays great, and there is no way I'd find another P style bass built the same. I just cant stand that pup in the way. To the point that this great guitar doesn't often leave the rack. I could mod a cheaper bass, but then I'd have a modded POS.

So...I can have this done to the DiMarzio p pup.

You can if you insist and put some work to it, find a p-bass wiring schematic, get a good quality tone pot with a capacitor and weld it
between the jack input and the volume pot according to the schematic.

Before you start the job, there are Yamaha's built like yours with a P-pickup, volume & tone pots.
You could also consider swapping your bass for one with an electronic set up that you like.

I have DiMarzios on my Hamer Blitz and my Ibanez Destroyer. I want to put some in my Ibby Roadstar and my Charvel 3B. I'm telling ya...they're gold. DiMarzio P/J pickups can really sing. They let your fingers do the talking...err...playing! haha :smug:

I found that wiring them in stereo, each with naught but a tone pot sounds out of this world. I'm curious about The X2N and X2N-7 in particular. Their output and wiring possibilities intrigue me. :D

I've found that having just a tone pot to control the pickup lets the pickups' natural sound breathe a lot and as you back off on the volume, the sound changes quite a bit. I think that's a sign of true art and craftsmanship. Considering the fact that the P/J pickups have such unique sounds...and the Precision pickups are so ballsy, I wonder how an X2N would work on a bass. I'm also a huge fan of their Super Distortion guitar pickups. They're awesome! :bassist:

This bass (allparts body, Warmoth P Neck, BAII and ultralights)now has a set of dimarzio model J's. I don't think I'll be changing the pickups ever. I love the way it sounds, especially with the series/paralell mod ( a Dimarzio push/pull pot).

I *LOVE* these pickups. I never had the kind of control over dynamics that I have now. I can go from reasonably smooth and polite to beastly aggressive just by digging in harder and harder. I've dug in hard on plenty of different basses but none have responded like this. I know I'm not imagining it either since our singer made a comment on the aggressive tone I was getting.
