Dingwall Combustion basses

So, I take it you are pleased with the tone?

Could you compare the Combustion to the Afterburner 1, especially regarding tone. I don't expect the Combustion to have the same level of fit and finish at this price point as the Afterburnder does. But, my passive AB1 was the best sounding bass I've ever owned, is it in the ballpark? Does it have a similar, "natural" tone, or does it sound more "active"?

Oh, I've already listened to those a couple dozen times, trust me. I just want to hear a comparison to the AB1 from someone who has actually played both instruments. I will probably be getting my own Combustion soon anyways, but some more info would help to seal the deal.

No 4-string Combustions yet. Just 5ers for now.

Word on the Dingwall forum is that they are in the process of trying to expedite the release of the 4-string. Don't know if demand for a 4-string Combustion was greater than expected or what, but they are shooting for Musikmesse last I heard, which is in late March. So, maybe the second quarter of 2010? But, nothing is official yet.

Of course, I am not a Dingwall employee and do not have any connections with the goings-on up is Saskatoon, I'm just a lurker at the Dingwall forum. But, some of this is straight from the horse's mouth.

The Combustion has an EMG preamp, but Dingwall pickups.

Well, no

First of all, the Combustion has a new alnico version of the standard Dingwall FD-3 pickup, which are neodymium. However, the alnico pup reviews are beyond positive and I'm not sure if I'd change them at all. Try first.

As for the preamp, Dingwall has stopped using Aggie and now uses Glockenklang preamps. You can still opt for Aggie but Glockenklang is standard AFAIK.

I've been steadily rehearsing and gigging with my C bass since it arrived. The pickups are just amazing. I wouldn't change a thing. Could this turn out to be my favorite Dingwall?
