The old forum was very easy to peruse... more transparent.
We are talking forum ONLY, not the rest of the site.
The rest of the site is beautiful but the forum is very "raw"?!
I don't see dates of last post in threads to indicate whats been busy. pictures don't seem to be loading. Its quite hard to determine what has been active.
Exactly, the new website is sweet. They really need to get the old side by side spec chart back, that’s my only gripe. That was a treasure trove of information. It was huge, but damn, did it lay it all out on one page? It did.
But the forum used to be fairly standard looking. Easy to see any new activity in all the categories. Like Nate said, you could check it out in seconds. And there wasn’t too much activity anyway. Maybe a new for sale, a show you Dingwall or Ask Sheldon.

I agree. About the only way to see new is to watch the notifications area, but once you click it, you can't tell if you went to the top or the bottom. If they stick with this, it almost seems like you need to put it in another spot because all the old stuff (with no pics) gets in your way. I go look once in a while, but not like I used to.
I tried to reset my password on the Dingwall forum; got a message saying I’m blocked.

Very interesting! Did you experiment with putting the compressor before the alpha omega and find it sounded better after it? I just assumed it should go before, and never even tried testing with it after before assembling my pedalboard. Now you've got me wondering if I should rip it apart and experiment some more.
Different flavors--overall volume control or smoothing of the envelope at the beginning. The latter can bring consistency and a consistent signal for later effects but also reduce the amount of "touch" control over the distortion. No unbreakable rules here (other than one should configure one's pedalboard to be reconfigurable)!
Well, I suppose a compressor generally goes better after an envelope filter, but even that can be broken.

I’d like to hear about that Alpha Omega ultra.
Specifically, does the USB port allow you to hear playback from a computer, or is it just for tweaking cab sims and other settings? Does it function as an interface?
With the headphone out jack, that would be pretty sweet. If not, seems like an aux in would have been nice.
That kind of usb connection is one of the things I find most useful about the Zoom B3. Everything is on the screen, and I can listen to tracks. It’s an interface as well.
And about that Omni cab sim pedal....I’m not getting it. One of the things I like about my fEarfuls is the full range sound. I felt like I was finally getting everything out of my bass, pedals and amp. When I hooked into other cabs, I felt like there was a choke at the end of the line. And other unpleasant things like beaminess, and poor off axis sound.
I guess that’s the point, all these cabs choke your sound in different ways, and you get a bunch of different sounds. I’ve got cab sims on the Zoom, and a mix control, but I haven’t really used it much. I guess its just more flavors.
Can somebody straighten me out on that one?

The MBD-1 is a different beast than the Alpha Omega. My take on them is that the AO's distortion is more "grindy" in the upper mids and the MBD-1 is more "growly" in the lower mids, among other differences like how the controls work. I've had an Alpha Omega in the past, but it didn't sit right with me...these days I have an Alpha Omicron and an MBD-1, and I like them both quite a bit for different reasons.
On the Alpha Omega Ultra...The USB port is just for loading IR's into the amp sim feature, no other functionality there. The IR ONLY comes out of the DI (XLR) and headphone jack...NOT the 1/4" output.
On the OmniCabSim Deluxe...I'm a fEARful guy as well. I've currently got a 15/6 + 15sub rig, and I'll be building a new pair of 15/6/1's this summer. The OCSD is an integral part of my sound, through DI, and through my fEARfuls. Do you play much with distortion/overdrive? If you don't I can understand how the pedal might not have the best utility for you...I play with lots of distortion, and the OCSD is vital for taming the harsh high end "buzz" you get from most distortion pedals. I also find the OCSD really useful for general tone shaping.

Three purposes, generally: emulation of traditional, less hi-fi cabs if one finds it important to cop the sound of a bassline recorded using traditional cabs (or do a retro thing); modifying the DI signal if your cabs are more traditional and you want a similar tone in FOH; and, as EMoney says, to make more certain overdrive/distortion sounds less piercing by introducing the cab limitations that tame it. It does those very well, and, if you're also a guitarist (ahem), it really makes DI vastly more bearable. Bassists whose sound is always clean and full-range have as much need of one as a luthier does a torque wrench.
Thanks, I can see how you would use the cab sim for that. I don’t really play with dirt. I’m happy with a little sponge, a little natural breakup. Still playing pretty clean.
Sounds like you are building a massive rig! I had a pair of 15/6/1’s. That’s a fEarsome rig. I ended up downsizing to a pair of 12/6 cubes. I sure like building those cabs. Fun projects. And great sounding cabs.

I’ll wait till the buzz dies down and pluck a used AO from the Talkbass used pedal river. Until then I’ll keep messing around with the dirt in the Zoom B3. Maybe experiment a bit more with the cab sims.
