Hey all.. I recently purchased my first Dingwall, it's an Afterburner 1, and I love it!.. How ever, there may be an issue with it, and it's driving me nuts.

When I play it, there is a strange vibration in the neck... it sounds like the truss rod is rattling inside the neck. It didn't do this when I first bought it, and when it started, I slightly adjusted the truss rod and it stopped. Well, it's doing it again.

Has any one else had this issue?? any ideas?? or should I contact Dingwall and pick some brains?

Another source of annoying/mystifying noise can be a too-wide slot in the nut.

Hey guys

I think my SPZ 5 is feeling lonely. I've been saving a few coins and now's the time to start wondering : which one ?

What I want : 5 strings. Most likely not an Afterburner since I've had an ABZ and would like to try something else (though some AB2's look very tempting). Ideally with a wenge neck / wenge or morado board. Ideally in stock somewhere. Ideally light.

I'm mostly considering :
A) SJ5. Same scale and profile as the SP might make it easier to go back and forth. But I already have parallel 4-strings in "j" configuration.
B) Sklar. Very curious about the dual density and "Z" neck profile. I already know I can deal with the extra 2'', plus I dont have any "mm" style bass. But more expensive (w/ stuff I don't need like the D-tuner) and possibly heavier ?

Thoughts ? :help:

I'm not sure I can help, other than walking you through my Dingwall journey thus far.

You may want to think about assessing your needs. Is this a need or a want ?

I took a chance on ordering my Super J5. Lucky for me, I fell madly in love with the thing.

It immediately was used on rock gigs wherever possible. 50% of my time on the Super J and 50% on the Fender NAV P.

Since I was back gigging with some regularity, I found myself beat up and tired after spending any length of time on the Fender P. OTOH, I can play the SJ5 for hours with no fatigue whatsoever.

At some point back in May, I came to the conclusion that I was willing to gamble and kick the Fender P to the closet, replacing it with a Super P5. I get phenomenal tone in two famous flavors and matching necks. This was appealing to me as I detest feeling the need to eyeball the neck.

Recently, I have been playing in a PW band. A five string is almost a necessity is Contemporary Christian music. And the Super J5 shines in this realm. Becuase of this, the SJ5 gets the nod 100% of the time.

The only caveat is that with PW, I find that my earlier choice to add the SP5 has now become an absolute necessity. I think that is a better choice for bringing all the usable bottom I can have to help cover the massive bass synth used in PW. The Super P5 will likely be moving to full time before even cooling off from being fondled by The House of Dingwall.

Point being here that my choice to add the SP5 has become a real need !

While I am all but certain that the SJ5 and SP5 will cover all my gigging needs across all genres, I have been eyeballing something in 37 inch scale.

The LS5 seems to be very appealing. Setting aside that the price strikes fear in to my checkbook, my main concern is associated with playing directly over the pick ups. I hate my finger tips touching PU's. And I don't believe that my technique is sound enough yet to support making the adjustment easily.

The other Dingwall that really speaks to me tonally is Alberto's AR5. Based on the youtube vid he did, there are a huge number of tones to be gotten out of that beast.

Bottom line, assess NEEDS you may have first and let that guide you. If you're covered, then go nuts and purchase whatever speaks to your soul.

Many of Sheldon's basses are 'dual density'...so that opens up the other Z series basses up for you as well. My Z neck retains the character/contour of the AB neck while being what I'd consider significantly slimmer. I find them both comfortable.

Actually a bit of both. I don't have a car (Dingwall money has to come from somewhere right ?) and enjoy cycling my way to the rehearsals when the weather allows, which is 30km one way (and will likely increase by 5-10 next year). I certainly do NOT enjoy 60km on my bike with a bass on my back so I leave one at the band's room. Turns out the SP is my only 5er and I miss it wherever it's not. Plus having a backup for those important gigs wouldn't hurt. That's why I feel the need for another 5 string bass.

I could be getting a Combustion or even a non-Dingwall to fit the bill. But the want part of me wouldn't be fully happy with it.

What I don't need (or want) is a whole lot of tones. Whichever bass I end up getting, it will most likely stay on "series", with the occasionnal treble cut (passive would be great). Which is why I've ruled out 3-pickup basses. Couldn't justify the upcharge getting a Z1/Z2 with a great top and useless-to-me toggle switches compared to a SJ or Sklar, which is how I've narrowed it down to these two. Too bad I can't just try them out at the local shop (but it wouldn't be as much fun then).

By the way... what is "PW" ?

I think the Prima neck profile is the same as the Z-series profile (according to the website it is) which makes me wonder if one could get an ABII with a Z neck?

Probably not. The way the AB meets the body is pretty different with how the Z series neck meets the body. There would have to be some pretty serious redesign/re-CAD mojo there, I would think.

Ah, I feared that might be the case. Never got to try a Z, so it's certainly possible that a Z1 or Z2 might speak to me. That being said, I don't think I'd have any issues with the ABII's neck as is I just liked the flatter profile a little better.

Fortunately this talk doesnt kill me. I have a formula to ancitpate DAS.

I am still madly in love with my SJ5 and it's been 8 months.

Super P arrives next month.

Using 9 months as guideline, less build time, I can order a third in January or February........basically any time before Winter NAMM and I'll be good ! :hiding:

The only inherent danger is that Rollerberg has a Prima fairly close. I can't go in to Knoxville for fear I'll call him and want to play it. Then I'll have to call Barry and order something.

No way in heck I am leaving the Ding at the rehearsal space. In fact, I think the only time it would have been out of my sight was when I drove through Nashville and offered to Let Mark Robertson gig it that night as I was coming back through the following morning. Didn't pan out as he had a sissy upriight gig !

You need an under 1000.00 bass if you're going to leave it, unless you are absolutely certain that no one will be ganking away on it when you're not there.

My choice would be an FSR Fender. I could care less if the thing caught fire. Otherwise, go for the car and console yourself with the SPZ.

I worry about theft, accidental damage, and even fire (I had a warehouse space I used to have nightmares about anytime I heard about a warehouse fire in town). And yes, I trust my bandmates entirely. I'm still not leaving a bass in a practice room unless its disposable. While I leave my amp setup in ours (mostly because of the hassle of moving it so often), I DO keep a backup at home.

I don't know about where you live but over here thieves are much more likely to break into my home than the rehearsal space - though fire is probably the other way around. I don't think I can do more than hope bad stuff doesn't happen and make sure I'm insured if they do.
