Hey All

Want some advice from experienced Dingwall types...

I have a lovely AB-II (Spalt Maple, Wenge / Walnut neck). I love the sounds, the quality and it's a dream to play. However, I am not so keen on the feel of the strings (tension).

I've tried a few brands of string but I cannot seem to find a set with a firm enough tension. I use 45s on my "normal" 34" scale length basses - EBMM SR5 (SS) and Sandberg Tt5 (Nickel) - and really like quite a stiff feel to the strings.

I am presuming that the longer scale length on the AB-II is resulting in the "looser" feel. Is this right?

Anyone else have the same experience?

I would love to hear any suggestions to remedy this. I've looked around but haven't seen any Dingwall compatible sets with higher gauges.

I'm currently using Payson Nickels.

The Payson Nickels were the 'tightest' of the strings I've tried, but I haven't gone beyond those and Sheldon's offerings. I actually enjoy the less tensioned ones best.

No, and yes.

I think the soft feel of the stock strings has more to do with construction and the standard Dingwall gauges. I imagine the other brands you've tried were simply mimicking the OEM specs.

At least a few of us have tried the new Dingwall nickel rounds in the long scale, and been pleased with the extra beef. Sheldon and the team went for a little extra tension on these, and the B string in particular has a nice heft to it.

The kicker for me is that I prefer the tone to the old SS sets, as well.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I will soon confirm this but I can anticipate that very soon Sansone Strings for Dingwall long scale 37" and also Super P / Super J will be available for international distribution thanks to my good friend Mark Stickley at Bass Direct UK

The two BD & SS are in the process of examining the details and orders, shipping costs etc. as we speak, I am very excited that we will be able to add another valid string manufacturer to the availabilty of fan fret long scale strings for the Dingwall basses, and as I have received 3 sets of these strings now I can honestly tell you that these are going to blow your socks off. They are "that" amazing. "You ain't seen nothing yet" doesn't even come close to describe how these sound and feel to the touch.

I can't wait.

I've had a bad experience with the Sansone I tried to put on my Combustion, the G string snapped in half as soon as i put it on...I'll stick to Dingwall strings, especially now that Nickels are available. :hyper:

Does anybody have an idea about the actual difference between an ABI and an ABZ?I've checked out the specs but I was hoping to hear from someone that had the chance to compare them in person.

Lots of great options. I haven't tried the new Dingwall strings, but I really like Circle K strings. They are nickel plated steels, and I like their tone, feel and tension.

Not digging the Z3 looks on the SJ5 but definitely loving that black hardware. Just IMO.

Dingwall club part 7. I'm down. Still have a while to go until my Super P/FD3 5er so I look forward to seeing everyone else's basses.

It's not for everyone, but I like it. It's like a modern high horsepower take on a classic muscle car. Its a completely beefy update.

^^^ Yep. That's a wenge neck everyone.

I think I still prefer the FD-3.4L pickups to the superfatty style Jazz pickups (without having used them but discussing them early on with Sheldon plus what everyone has said). I have grown farther away from the traditional Jazz bass tone that I once enjoyed. That 'bigblock' triple pickup has to have some heft to it.

Sheldon hasn't converted me to the shortscales yet...I really love the hell out of his regular issue designs.
