Dingwall Owners Club

Geez, Duck-O, that's all I need to hear.
First this cheap SOB spends money on another bass guitar...then realizes it might not sit in any of the stands he has and needs to spend more money...now you're saying I might want another amp setup...Oh, well...I'll just tell my wife you told me to do it.

(Hmm...I wonder if anyone would notice if I pulled the Studio Channel and a power amp out of the band's PA racks?)

Question!!!

Played my Super J on a long (4 hours plus) gig and it started sounding distorted. I have an Aggie OPB-1 pre but I never use it. Always thought this bass sounds way punchier passive. I'd heard that the battery needs to be changed even when run passive. Any truth to this? This is the first active bass I've owned in many years and I never even run it active :)

I don't (to my knowledge) have experience with the OPB-1 but I've experienced this myself with other preamps and have heard it stated by a few others as well, so I'd say it's just a battery issue.

Ok, brought the bass back to the hotel and removed the pick guard. Both batteries are beyond dead. I'll pop fresh batteries in and test it before the gig :)

"beyond dead". Zombie batteries!!!

Well that's inconvenient. If I were designing a preamp, I wouldn't consider it done until I had the bypass function (in the event of battery death) happening. At least you aren't inconvenienced very often considering how long batteries usually last. :)

Just confirmed my order for an ABZ5 in Invalid Link Removed! Decided to go with the maple fretboard (thanks for the help guys!) as well as series/parallel toggles for each pickup and blue Luminlay side dots. The wait begins...

Before viewing the image you linked, I'd never seen this finish. Previously, the only black finish I found attractive was transparent. The natural to black is very cool!

There's a bypass switch on my bass, but yeah, seems like you should be able to bypass batteries altogether! Part of me wants to look into a Darkglass pre, or something. The Aggie OPB-1 just ain't my cup of tea. I like the thickness it adds to the low end, but it's too much at the expense of the mids. Then again, passive sounds just fine to me :)

So, did batteries fix the issue?

I won't know until tonight. Our gear is in a club we play two nights in a row. There's other groups playing at the moment and will be until we go on at 9pm. I'm not gonna sweat it as I could get by the whole set on upright if I had to :)

On another note- been running flats on my SJ which sounded pretty cool. The E string went dead unusually fast though. La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass strings usually last forever. Put on a 45-105 set of SS Lo Riders and absolutely love them! My new favorite RR string for my tastes

Did a session today at House of Blues Studio A for an artist named Mark Collie. Producer was David Leonard (John Mellencamp, Paul MacCartney, Rush and many others). Since the artist is a buddy, I only brought one bass. My Super J/P4. The producer asked if I brought any other basses before I even plugged in! Always happens with my Dingwall. They want you to have Fenders or Laklands in Nashville, but they always wind up loving the Super J :) could not have hoped for a better bass sound. Used my Reiner 6SL7 pre, a sealed 18 cab and DR SS Lo Riders, 45-105.

I began using the same strings last year and have zero desire to try anything different. The deliver everything I want to hear and are of consistently good quality.
