Sheldon's bring my Ash/maple ABZ 6 with him on his trip to Vancouver...complete with Hipshot on the low B...can hardly wait....love those Fury/Dingwall pickups...got a recording session that night as well...wonder if this is the first ABZ 6?

Oscar Stagnaro is peruvian and I feel really proud to use his book as I am peruvian too

What I like best about this bass is that the notes are clear and full. So far, I´ve been able to play lots of differents styles, I even use it in my jazz combo.

Tried a Combustion last week. First time I had a Dingwall in my hands...

First of, there is almost no adjusting needed to the fanned frets. Only higher than the 14th fret is it weird.

The tone of the Combustion didn't do it for me, but trying other basses in the store. I'm a passive kind of guy.

The B string was different then expected. Lots of people talk about a thunderous B string. This is not the case IMHO. It sounds like the other strings, very balanced. This is nice, but something to adjust to IME. On my own bass, the b string is thunderous! It sounds much fatter then the other strings, so you can not use it in any part of any song. This bass had also the imperfection that the B string was less loud then the other four strings. I think this is not normal on all combustions.

Dingwall owners, am I assuming right that on a Dingwall there is less difference between an F first fret E string and an F sixth fret B string then on a straight fretted bass? Or between a B second fret A string and a B seventh fret E string or ...

Correct.

About the thunderous low B - you are correct, it is foremost balanced with regard to other strings. Dingwall provides you with the most useful B around. When I first brought my Dingwall to practice, bandmates commented on how they can actually hear the notes I'm playing: and that is in a band with two heavily distorted guitars de-tuned to C standard. I wasn't louder or anything: the notes down below were just a lot richer.

If you want your B to shake the ground, there is a simple solution: boost bass on your pre or amp. That is how it is supposed to be, right? The thing is, it will still have clear pitch which other basses don't provide, AND the low E will be just as thunderous as the low B, so no imbalance even in that setting.

Iván congratulation, you nailed the tune and the sound. I am also loving my ABZ 5 and it has become my no.1 bass, everything else I own is for sale since the ABZ 5.

Some questions about the ABZ...

Do they have the FD-3A or FD-3 4L pickups. I know the Dingwall site says 4L, but it has pics where they are shown with what looks to me 3A's...
How do these pickup types differ in sound?
If they have in fact 4L's, how are they wired internally? Parallel or series?
What is meant in the specifications on the Dingwall website with straps pins: dunlop locking, pins only... do we have to buy the locks to attach to the strap ourselves?
Is there any customization possible for the ABZ? I have cool idea for wiring instead of the tone (which I would never use).

The one I have was built 12/10/2009 and has these pickups.

Can you tell which ones they are, cause I wouldn't know

Abz pups are FD-3 4L in combustion shell, as far as i know. Maybe Sheldon does this to lower costs.

People expect longer string = Bigger tone. As you mentioned a bigger sounding B does not fit with the other 4 strings and is hard to fit into the song.

We are trying to make all the strings have a similar voice so that all notes are useable and easy to hear.

The weaker B can be either the bass end of the pickup needing to be raised slightly or unconsciously backing off on the attack when playing the B due to force of habit.

The ABZ features FD34L pickups wired series bridge and parallel neck. You can re-wire them yourself in either configuration. There are no custom wiring options available from the factory.

FD3A's sound warm, compressed and sweet. FD34L's sound punchy, aggressive with lots of lows and highs.

I've had Dingwall GAS a couple of years ago, but due to cost (young guy) put that thought in the back of my head. The DAS is back!

I'm sorry, but I don't think either is the case. The E-G strings were balanced perfectly. Raising the pickup on one side would make the E louder too, right, thus unbalancing... And it wasn't my attack because I noticed it immediately and tried pulling harder but it was weaker in output.

Do you think another rotary switch would make sense with the following options? (Series : s, Parallel : p, Neck : n, Bridge : b)

1 ns bs
2 ns bp

The two 4 way rotary controls would give 12 sounds in total. Would they be useful? Or would it be too subtle to notice in the mix?

Reading the specs the ABZ seems a little more geared towards a scooped sound, with the swamp ash body, the pickups... correct? So nickel strings would complement them best!?

Have the store contact me and I'll send out a replacement set of pickups.

The two rotary switches would work. We've found it more intuitive to use two mini switches to control the series/parallel functions for each pickup but YMMV.

Sounds absolut sweet and mighty. The passive Electonics with the PU Selector with thr Toggle Switch is so flexible. Clear, warm and always punchy. A real great Bass.

The Craftmanship is really amazing. Absolute flawless and the Finish is Killer with a stunning Flamed Maple Top.
