Dingwall per-pickup series/parallel switches: useful?

Oh I've been mining that thread for tons of info! Most recent change is to a FDV neck / SFII middle / FDV bridge configuration. With toggle switches of course.

I'll post there once my order is actually approved, I keep on finding options on the Dingwall site that they don't actually offer (e.g. birdseye make fingerboard, alas). I'm giving my dealer a workout!

As far as I know, to submit the initial order, I think you just need the model (AB, Z, Prima), number of strings, and number of pickups. Everything else are open until they get close to actually building yours, that's when you have to lock it in and make no more changes.

That seems likely! But my dealer wants to give me an upfront quote for customizations & an ETA from Dingwall, and then get paid in chunks while I wait. Even though aspects will undoubtedly change as Dingwall introduces new pickups / changes up woods / etc. Final invoice will reflect the adjustments up or down.

I’d like to do p-tone in the middle position, FD3 in the others and go to a six position rotary to add the solo middle among others.

Here is John Fox of John Fox Bass playing my Z3, and he does alter the S/P switches during the demo, and late in the video does some explicit comparison of the difference between the settings:



I find they make a big enough difference that when I extensively modified one of my NG3s, I wired it up with toggles for series/paralle switching, and the AB2 I have in production right now also includes them. I find them useful enough that I will always spec any Dingwall custom bass I order with the S/P switches.

Fortunately it’s not an either/or proposition. You can have both a six way rotary and SP switches if you want.

Which is how I wired up one of my NG3s.

Do you get the same finger tapping clarity in passive mode, or did John have it in active mode when he tapped those upper register notes? They were unbelievably clean and clear!

Oh, and the order has been placed. 24 month ETA for my passive ABI-5 (FDV/SFII/FDV) with S/P switches (thanks to everyone on this thread!). Maple neck & fingerboard.

Unless the extra cost would cause financial burden, probably best to just get them. With my ABZ4 I typically just have them in the stock positions (series neck/bridge parallel middle), but I it’s nice to have the option to switch when needed. Neck pickup always series for me, but huge range of tones playing around with the other 2, especially with the bridge/middle pickups in series.
