Here’s the story: one year ago I decided, after 40 years playing a 4-string Precision, it was time to 1) dip my toe in the Dingwall pool, and 2) see whether I might like a 5-string--but not both at once. Step 1 was to buy this beautiful 4 string Super PJ, which I immediately fell in love with and played almost exclusively for many months—couldn’t believe the playability and sound: the fanned frets make it super-fast, like a short-scale, yet with big, girthy lows and low-mids that were both clear yet unmistakably P-bass-solid. Phase 1 complete: Dingwall? Oh yes!

Next, I scored an inexpensive (non-Dingwall) 5-string Jazz to test out part 2 of my plan. At first I was reluctant to set aside the lightning-fast Super PJ to fumble with this heavier, fatter-necked extra-stringed beast. Little by little, though, after forcing myself to practice, then dragging it along to jams and band practices, I started get the hang of the additional muting, and my fingers figured out what to do with that extra string, and I came to know the joys of playing in D, E and F while rooted on a comfy stretch of B-string rather than crowding the nut or dinking around solely on the A, D and G strings. Phase 2 complete: 5 strings? Oh, h#!! yes!

So here it is a year later, and I’m launching phase 3 of my evil plan: gathering funds for a Lee Sklar or other Dingwall 5-string. Which means, sadly, parting with this Super PJ I’ve had so much fun with:

(Note: Pics are from the original owner’s sale thread (SOLD - Dingwall Super PJ!!!), (I bought it from the second owner) and the bass is unchanged from those pics. Happy to provide additional pics on request.)

Weight: 7 ½ lbs. That’s not a typo. But the sound is anything but light—SLAYS the P-bass tone.
Width at nut: 1 5/8”
Scale length: multi, from 32” on the G to 34.25” on the E
4 position rotary P/U Selector (J soloed, J+P parallel, J+P series, P soloed)
Passive Tone Fusion control (counter-clockwise, standard vintage-style treble rolloff, clockwise, a mid-scoop).
Included in sale:
Two pickguards
(Black/White/Black, one each for standard and reverse-p configuration--the body is routed for both.)
Hipshot drop-D tuner (installed)
Dunlop dual action straplocs
Dingwall wrench set
(It came to me with no tools, but I ordered the Dingwall set and will include it.
A fresh unopened set of Dingwall nickel medium roundwound strings (bass is wearing DR Lo-Riders now.)
Dingwall gigbag.

Condition: some minor dings and scuffs, (see pics) most fairly hard to see except up close. It was gigged and used on sessions by the original owner, a Dingwall endorser.

One thing I really love about this bass is the almost invisible natural polyester finish. The few minor dings and scuffs are hardly noticeable unless you look really closely, whereas even a perfect gloss finish shows every smudge and fingerprint. What you notice most on this bass is the beautiful solid ash body, maple neck and morado fretboard.

Not looking for trades except possibly a Lee Sklar or other Dingwall 5.

Thanks for reading a way-too-long post.

Start a conversation if you have questions. I’m in no great panic to sell, but thought I’d better get it out there for the tax-refund season so I can move toward Phase 3 of my plan.

These are ridiculously nice bass's. My buddy has two and they are the best playing and sounding 4 strings I have ever laid my hands on. GLWTS

An incredible bass that I only sold to fund a custom SJ3X build; I used it live and in the studio extensively for a year, including for this session (in PJ parallel mode) at Capitol:

Can you feel the wood grain through the train or no? Trying to figure out if the finish is similar to an ABZ or not.

Yes you can. I believe it is the same finish as the ABZ--the so-called "open grain satin finish."

Thanks for the love, guys. She's still available at this point. Lots of interest and pm's but no deals finalized yet. Give her a good home and help me move to the next station on my Dingwall journey!

Exactly right.

I'm honestly shocked this is still here considering how fast other Dingwall's are selling.

This is the only Super PJZ in existence as far as I'm aware, the FD3 was added after the fact courtesy of a Sheldon CNC'd template (Mo from Nordstrand handled the installation in LA) and it's a world class instrument at a significant discount and without the 9 month wait.

Just to chime in that bass tone in the recording is banging!

I play a Super PZ 5 and it's just sublime. If I could get a second I'd jump at the opportunity however I think I got pretty luck when I got mine (ridiculously good price especially in the UK). I'd love to try the 4 string and can only imagine it would play real buttery!

Good luck with your sale, Sir!

Again, thanks folks for all the love and horse's-mouth testimony. I, too, am surprised it's still here. By the way, just for fun I switched the P pickups from the reversed orientation to the traditional, which I'd never tried, and holy sweet mother of Thor... I guess this is why it's called the SUPER P. More girth on the E and A, with very little noticable loss of girth on the D and G, thanks to the optimum scale length for those strings in the first place. My old favorite bass has just became my new favorite bass. Makes me want to raise the price:). And makes me wonder if I really want a 5 string version of this bad enough to sell it. The thought of going through life with this bass as my main axe only makes me smile.

This was THE bass that encouraged me to get hooked on Dingwalls! I have three currently (just sold one last week), but the Super PJ's are still my fav. The ease of playability is crazy awesome, and the sound...well.....it has the typical P tone...but with a power-kick between the....eyes.
GLWTS ...I hear ya on the sellers remorse too.....it'll be a happy/sad day.
