Hi there
I have been thinking to purchase a Dingwall bass most for a heavy metal band...what do you guys think about the fanned fretboard? I have never liked light basses but when you are getting older you start to think about it...is it lighter than Fenders? any other pro and cons about this bass? NG-2 specifically...here in Canada the price tag is around $2000 which is not so bad for a passive bass in comparison a Fender elite which should be my second choice is around $2500 is it worth it?

Take one for a test drive and see if you like it. Fanned frets do have advantages it seems and imo the NG-2 is a great choice for modern metal. The Darkglass tone capsule in conjunction with the stock pups sounds pretty sweet on the vids I've seen/heard.

I've been using Dingwalls for a few years now... started with two Combustions, and now own three Afterburners.

For the most part, they will be lighter than Fenders on the whole. There are some light Fender basses though, so you'd have to take it case by case.

Also, note, the NG-2 (and vanilla Combustion) are not passive. One has the Darkglass pre, the other an EMG.

To me, totally worth it, and I haven't looked back since buying mine. The only non-Dingwall I play now is my Pedulla fretless... mostly because I don't think I'd have the woodshed time for a fretless Dingwall :)

Thanks Selta, I am looking for a bass that has very low string action (good for tapping) and it looks like these basses are really low...

Hi Emerson.

The NG-2 is an EXCELLENT bass for metal. I owned one for a hot second. The quality is second to none. I sold it to fund a Combustion. The fanned frets are easy to get used to and make a lot of sense. Action on mine was low and flawless and very easy to play. There is a lot of midrange to cut into a mix. I don't play metal, so I went for a more tradition al tone.

I did a quick rough demo of it right before I sold it.

One of the best NG-2 demos I've seen for more traditional tones. Thanks for posting. I think for many players, the NG-2 would benefit from a passive tone control with the Darkglass pre bypassed. Swapping out the high mid pot with this Delano stacked pot and a 47 uF cap for the 250 ohm bottom pot should provide it.

Hi cut is what I was missing from that setup. I am familiar with that pot-it was on a Delano preamp I had once. But overall if I was a metal player that's definitely the base I would use along with a trustee P Bass.

WatsonTBass is my YouTube channel. I started it because I couldn't find any good demos of what the little U-bass could really do, so I brought mine at the time to a bunch of gigs. It's not very active anymore, but I plan to ramp it up in a major way this coming year.

The NG-2 is active, and a phenomenal bass that I'd recommend far more than a Fender Elite for a metal band :thumbsup:

Fittingly, the bassist from Periphery uses the same bass and they have a tune called "Make Total Destroy" ;)

I keep that bass in BEAD tuning, occasionally tuning up to C standard or down to drop A or G# :thumbsup:

Ha! I bought into them before I even played one. Got one in, looked at it, and wondered how I could have been so freakin stupid as to buy a bass that there was no freakin way anyone could play. After this thought ran through my head I said to myself that I had to at least try it as it was too late to change my mind. In about 3 minutes it was natural and easy and in 5 minutes I had a big grin as I too was a bit shocked at the easy transition.

Good to know bebass...it is really hard to find a bass here where I am so a test drive would be almost impossible...but with all the positive feedback I think I am able to give it a try! thanks

I was in the same boat as far as a test drive as there was nowhere around me where I could find one. It was a leap of faith to order basses I had never played.
