direct into iphone??

title says it all..

sometimes when i'm making a little recording, i don't want to set up my interface, laptop, sync the video, and all that.

things like this:

would be significantly easier if there was a way to get direct audio straight into the iphone.

does such a thing exist? will it work?

I have a zoom H6 that i use as an interface normally. Could i buy a USB-to-lightning cable, and go direct? seems too easy. could probably just buy a cable and try...

lets hear the recommendations - or just let me know if i'm dreaming and it won't work :thumbsup:

You can use the H6 with a camera-connection kit from apple (usb to lightning cable). It is a bit pricy. You can't use cables that just have the purpose to charge the iPhone.
You need this:
Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter

Most audio apps just support channels 1+2 of the audio interface. So you can't for example connect your bass to inputs 3-6 of the H6. But it could be possible that the H6 can be set up to send a mix of all channels to inputs 1+2 of the iPhone.
I have used the H6 with my iPad a lot and now use a Tascam Model12 with my iPad and the camera adapter.

thank you for this - i had no idea this existed.

I already researched the Irig and ordered the one with two inputs. seems more purpose-built for what I wanted to do (direct in or use a real microphone)

suppose I could report back on my experience with the irig. seems pretty straight forward, but we'll see.

okay so,

the Irig Duo I/O is either defective or a really goofy design. the inputs seem to be operating as an either L or R stereo channel - so plugging my bass directly into input 1, the Iphone video will only play back with the audio on the left side, and nothing on the right. tried multiple cables, etc, same issue on either side.

My question about trying the adaptor is will it be an issue that the H6 is a mini usb-b - and will need an adaptor to match the apple USB to lightning cable?

may try that, or the one channel Irig. i'd like to be able to input either a microphone or instrument. two channels would have been nice, though.

(if anyone knows if this unit is defective or not please do let me know!)

Your Irig isn't defective. It uses two channels that are interpreted from the iPhone if you are using for example the video app as a stereo signal. There is nothing connected to input 2, so input 1 gets on the left channel and nothing gets into the right channel.
If you would - for example - use garageband, you could tell garageband that you want - for example - input 1 of the irig to go into track one (a mono channel), then you could record other tracks and mix it to stereo.

This is the reason I supposed in my prior posting that the H6 - I'm quite sure - offers the possibility to send a mix signal to the iPhone. So if you - for example - record your bass to input one and pan it into the middle, the stereo mix send to the iPhone would contain your bass signal on both channels (the stereo sum).
You can't directly connect a bass or guitar to the H6, you need a DI box that transforms it into a mic-level signal, or some kind of line-out from a bass-amp or preamp.

For USB you simply need an adaptor, USB is downward compatible to all prior USB versions.

The problem with adding most of the smartphone mics is they are still close to the phone. For effective audio you need to move the mic close to the source. There are ways to do that, and you can find useful information on the "Homebrewed Music" website.

Do be aware that no matter what mic you use as an input it almost always goes through the phone's preamp circuit which usually has compression and limiting built in. That sets the quality of any audio you are trying to record with your phone.

understood!

again, my goal is just to have better audio for little videos and such. not at all trying to have something we'll all be amazed at. but, some version of a direct signal (or a decent microphone) that could go direct to the iphone video would be really nice.

had no idea that to get both L/R channels on an iphone video i'd need to be recording elsewhere than direct the the phone. my whole goal it just to have a very simple rig, and to not need to record audio and video separate all the time.

not sure if the one channel Irig is what I want, or perhaps the adaptor to use the H6.

update,

borrowed a friends older Irig pro. works exactly as i wanted. bummer I can't do 2 inputs, particularly for micing up a double bass, but that's fine.

problem solved, ordering one for myself now. returning the original.

now I can get back to doing the lords work, and recording bach chorales on electric bass.

This change like 10 years ago. No longer does everything goes through the Phone's preamp.

Voice menu app by default does use compression
Which is Why I tell people to not use Voice Menu because everyone who tries it, uses the defaults.
But it's easy to turn it off:
Go to Settings, Search on "Audio Quality", and change Voice Menu to Lossless

what kind of cable are you using to connect the bass and iRig? TS or TRS?

Hmmm…I’d have expected this problem if you’d used TRS instead of TS.

Is it the entire signal that’s only coming out of one channel (eg bass signal AND your music track signal)? Or is it only one or the other?

I am going direct into an iphone 13mini. I'm trying to use the irig to get better (not professional A-grade. just direct signal / better microphone) audio when using the camera for videos.

several friends i'd discussed this with have said "oh just record to garageband then do X then Y..." - my whole goal was to have a very simple rig where I can get cleaner audio, direct into an Iphone camera.

and again, for the record, when i borrowed my friends one-input Irig... this worked perfectly, and I've already ordered one for myself.

nonetheless it would be nice to figure out how to use the two channel so I can use two microphones on a bowed bass in the future. (or mic on piano and on bass, etc.)

I tested a total of 4 Irigs, none of which worked for how I needed them to.

in re-reading your post, i realized your using a proper mixer via this adaptor - I had no idea that could be an option.

I think even if the H6 is not the way for me, i'd prefer that. I like the idea of being able to use multiple microphones and/or inputs as needed.

Ordered everything and will give the H6 a test soon. about $50 worth of cables, but that's still cheaper than the cheapest Irig, so it's fine by me.

and how about a conclusion to this thread,

the apple camera adaptor works 100% with my zoom h6.

i can use any input, combinations of mic/input, etc. there are no issues.

if the irig worked it would have been a bit more convenient, but then again the zoom has great built in mics so that's worth the extra work.
