DIRTY 75 P...would ya???

awesome bass. a refin would be criminal, looks great as is. the J pup spacing looks a little too close to the bridge, not something I'd worry about though. a few months ago I bought a 74 tri-tone sunburst maple board precision off a friend of mine for $700.00. it too has a J pup and way more wear than that one. the back of the neck has most of the finish worn off and you can tell it's from play, not sandpaper. I have to laugh at the concern over the headstock being re-attached, I have never heard of a precision bass having a snapped headstock. i literally drove over one of my precisions in a fullsize Chevy pick up (by accident, c'mon), it was in a gig bag to boot. no damage!! congrats on the bass, i would've bought that without thinking twice.

You could always use a stock guard, do VVT knobs, and drill a hole in the side of the bass for an input jack.
With my old 75 P/J the pot cavity had to be routed to fit the extra knob with proper spacing. I wouldn't do that now, but it seemed like a good idea in 1981 :D

Brother?

:D

That's literally my bass, but I have the black guard, and my knobs are unevenly spaced...

I'm just gonna play it how it is. Clean 75P pics to come!

That's a great deal on that 74. I'd love to see a pic.

Yeah, the headstock has DEFINITELY not been snapped. It's just a line from where it was sanded. The neck feels like butter.

Agree on this, it looks just great to me! even the knob spacing tells a story.

Did anything happen to the Chevy pick up? :p

Yup, I had one just like that as well (with the white pickguard). Put SD Quarter Pounders in it and played that for quite a while..

Then I had the frets pull... and refinished the body... and kinda trashed it. So it goes.

Hey! That one has a white PG! What gives??

Anyone know when he put the black guard on? I can only find pictures of "Old Roger" with the black on black...

The black guard went on after 1975. Check out this vid from 1972:

Sorry for the rough quality, Ive seen much sharper copies.

Either way check out that lit joint in Roger's headstock.

I think the change was made to match Gilmour putting a black guard on his strat around 1974 (I think).

That is like one of the best version of Careful With that Axe Eugene out there. I think they were smoking the good stuff that night.

Is this giving you white pickguard GAS yet?

Yeah, great vid! Thanks! Roger looks RIPPED in that opening shot. LOL

No gas for a white PG as of now. Maybe if I had a mint green or stained/aged parchment guard, that'd be cool, but white looks too "standard" Fender to me. I think it'd make the bass look too new, unless I could find a nice beat up 70's PG that didn't cost 1/3 of what I paid for this bass LOL.

Reminds me of going to Guitar Center as a kid and every single Fender hanging on the wall had white PG's (or so it seemed).

Black is probably gonna stay for a while. :)

Haha, didn't mean to give that a "thumbs down" not sure why that came up. Maybe I'm smokin too much of the "Good Stuff"

Finally!

I had some time to upload some pics last night, and here they are! Got the new knobs on there, and some strap locks. Got her as "clean" as possible with Goo Gone, but I think she'll just be stayin a dirty girl...
I have no intentions of gettin it buffed or refin'd since I found the finish is indeed original. Sorry I'm not much of a photographer, and don't have one of those fancy digital SLR cameras, but without further delay...

(removed the added headstock pin, you can see the hole. I like it though)

(this murky green tint is how it looks in the sun, pretty cool)

The black/green thing seems common, my 1981 Rick is the same due to the clearcoat yellowing with age.

That P looks fine, just like you'd expect an authentic 1970s 'player bass' to look, crazy mods and all.
We all did some foolish mods back then I guess.

I'm not really a P bass guy, but I'd snap that one up in a minute myself given the chance, considering that you said it plays and sounds great.

A great score with a cool story behind it.
Good going!
:)

Definitely a cool bass. Thanks for the love

Yeah, it really looks great! congrats on that!
I wonder why only the back of the bass has that greenish tint? or does the front have it as well?

Yeah I'm not sure why the front isn't more "greenish, murky, lake water looking"

I do see a couple weird things about this finish. I think someone filled wear marks with black paint - almost like model paint around the Jazz PU, and down by the holes for the bridge cover.

There's also a drippy paint line up by the upper horn and scratches like someone tried paint over some wear, or peel a sticker off with a butter knife and then repaint. It was incredibly hard to photograph. I have a feeling someone started to refinish the bass and decided it would look worse so they stopped. It's kind of a 1/4th refin or something...that's my guess...

Kind of the fun of owning one of these is the crazy things it's been through, and the things it's GOING to go through :p
