Disappointed with Hartke

I bought a hartke 15 off ebay. Sounded excellent, used it for two gigs. No problem. Was messing around at the house, Ran a 7 string guitar through it. Minimal volume. And it blew.. Now I've acquired a 210 xl to go with a 1 15 boogie cab. Sounded phenomenal. No probs yet. But they seem to be finicky when pushed hard.. Time will tell, but the sound is great

I didn't want to tell my life story, but my cousin was shot and killed two weeks ago (my problems pale in comparison), my wife totaled her Lexus (I drive a 10 year old truck), I have my first on stage failure ever, and I have a gig in two weeks that's being sponsored by a local radio station, so I want to be prepared.

I thought I could vent to some fellow bass players. I needed to get this off my chest, it's been a rough couple of weeks. I've seen others do this without being attacked.

The rep did the right thing steering you away from the HyDrive as a replacement - it's NOT a good idea to just put another type of driver in the same chamber with a dissimilar driver (the XL) unless the cabinet was specifically designed for it. Doing so would almost surely compromise the sound of BOTH drivers, and possibly their reliability as well. Changing drivers in a cab (even the same size from the same company) is not simply like changing your shirt - there's way more that goes into cab design than most of us end users realize.

You can also sometimes find used XL 10" drivers on eBay if you're just trying to keep that cab going for a while.

That's the biggest bummer, I love the sound. I was tempted to go with the XL 210, but I just don't want to risk another failure. At least with another manufacturer you can get replacements from other sources. With Hartke, you have to go through them. I wasn't upset with the failure, it's my first, so I've been lucky. I'm bummed because there are no option for replacement.

Probably, but I have heard of people doing it. I've done a little speaker building (I have a degrees in electrical engineering) so I was going to do a little research first.

Many on TB use and like Hartke equipment and I happen to really like the way it sounded. You assume I found out about the problem prior to purchasing it, wrong again. Upon having the issue I found some helpful posts. The keyboardist, who no longer has his Hartke, told me that he had the same issue years ago. I'm not sure why you feel the need to respond, but don't feel compelled to respond further. Many people rant here because most members are understanding, give helpful advice and even add humor. I came here to vent to fellow bass players, not get into a pointless argument.

Reads like a rant to me. Sorry man, **** happens! If you've been in the biz 30 years, you sure don't act like it. Next time you just want to "vent", and don't want any advice or constructive criticism, try stating that in your opening statement (or better yet, in the thread title).

That way you'll save other from wasting their time and experience with you. Sheesh!

It was a rant, I stated that in the original post, glad you caught it. So you didn't notice my appreciation for the constructive responses I got? Apparently you didn't waste any of your time actually reading the thread. Can't say I blame you, I probably wouldn't have either. I just would have refrained from responding if I had nothing relative to add. But that's just me.

Eh, clearly you wouldn't since you didn't.:rollno: Guess I don't share your definition of appreciation. FWIW, I thought my response (post #2) was constructive since I used to deal with the different manufacturers for people like you years ago.:scowl: Oh, well.... off to more constructive things.

Maybe it was the unwarranted personal attack that obscured your constructive advice. The "people like you" remark is certainly supportive.

Some of us work in customer support or own a business. We have to deal with "people like you" all the time.
At work we or the people that work for us have to bite our tongues and try to be as nice as possible while we listen to their ranting, whining and general rudeness. The whole time wanting to reach through the phone and choke them unconscious.

So when we are away from work and killing time on TB and see these uncalled for "rants" about nothing we speak our mind.

You say you see people rant on here all the time and they do. The ones that have a valid point get help and support. The invalid ones get jumped on.

Dude, chill out. You're not required to read and respond to every thread. Why are you wasting your time reading my rant anyway? I wanted to get something off my chest and got some positive feedback in return. You weren't personally invited to the party, don't complain about the entertainment. I hope you're not this way towards everybody, it's unhealthy. It's late, get some rest, I am.

First off sorry about your tough time, I don't want to jump on you and make you feel like you are being attacked but...
The cab was second hand and although you think it hasn't been pushed hard before you acquired it you don't know for sure. Harkte is a name that is out there but they are not really a big player so it is not surprising that they will occasionally run out of stock. A whole month, sheesh

The rep sounds helpful to me.

1. Rep says you shouldn't mix speakers in a cab even though they could have got a sale out of you they told you the truth.

2. And the rep tried to save you money by telling you that the other speakers could go, I assume because if one has been treated rough an given up the chances are the other speaker in the same cab are not in great shape either. Saved you some more coin

3. Then offered you a cheap short term solution.

I know you say you just wanted to rant but the subject chose to direct the said rant seems a bit misguided to me

There are a lot different things that van go into your speaker cone tearing. One of under guys who worked at SWR years ago told me that pushing a cab after a temperature change can rip a cone if you don't gradually work up to fully driving the speaker. Also if you don't travel with a cover it's possible to get debris in the cone that can tear it over time as it vibrates. I understand your frustration as I have had issues at gigs before. However I've owned Hartke cabinets and never had a problem. I've heard the silicone idea from a few cabinet makers. I actually had Eden tell me that when I was waiting for a replacement driver. It works for a temporary fix. You don't want to mix the hydrive driver with the aluminum drivers. They are totally different on design and sound..plus you run this risk of blowing one of the other drivers. If you want to use the hydrive speakers then you need to replace all four. I've actually put them in one of my old Eden 2x10cabinets I wasn't using and it sounds killer with the Eden tweeter.

Looks like the perfect storm to try to overdrive speakers so you can hear yourself. This could have led to your speaker damage.
