You might be right but it also sounds good when playing with double thumb. It’s not all on the G string though, the first note and the A are on the D string. I think that he is also doing a hammer on from the 4 to 5 in my transcription.

Doesn’t sound like pick to me at all. I think it is slapping, either thumb or double thumb.

Color of Money would have been part of his gig live..even though AJ did the studio track..so my monies on him using a pick.
Larry Graham has an unusual slap style...and it wasnt what VW made it into DT, although he may have played up and down strokes, but he didn't make a feature of it.

So, back then, you either thumbed it..possible..or you picked it.
I'd suggest covering Color makes it likely it was a pick bass player.

There were a few guys double thumbing back then...but they never brought it to the masses and it was more likely they adapted their legacy style to try and sound like thumbing as that was the style of the day. imv
