In this thread we will discuss all the great singers that are out there.

Here's my favorites:

Roger Daltrey, The who
John Fogerty, Creedence clearwater revival
Klaus Meine, Scorpions
Robbie Williams, solo

I'm a newbie trying to learn how to sing and i wonder how good these singers are out of a technical aspect, if it's possible measure singing that way ^^

What are your favorite singers? :cool:

Have'nt really listened to The Who so I don't have an opinion about Roger Daltrey, but the other ones you mentioned are indeed great singers and performers.

My all-time favourite singer (and songwriter), is Stevie Wonder. I particularly like the way he's able to express all kind of feelings (especially happiness) through his songs, without ever sounding silly... Compare for instance "Lately", "For once in my life", "Living for the City", "Isn't she lovely" and the newer "A time to love", just to mention a few. He's the master of soul music, no doubt about it.

Should this thread be only for male or also female singers?

Matthew Barlow - THE most evil voice in all of heavy metal. You can gargle yogurt into a microphone for all the death metal you want, and I'll laugh cuz you're sounding so rediculous trying to be scary. But this man's voice was truly scary. Truly EVIL.

Brad Delp - I wish I had his range. Another terrible shame.

Bruce F-ING Dickinson - The best of the best.

James LaBrie - First singer that inspired me to learn how to truly sing.

Russell Allen - The most passionate, emotional, and powerful voice in all of prog metal.

Tobias Sammett - Tied for the best frontman I've ever seen in a modern metal band.

Andy B. Franck - Tied for the best frontman I've ever seen in a modern metal band.

Brian Setzer - The best rock n roll voice out there. It's like Elvis with insane guitar skills and knowledge. Too damned perfect.

All of the above mentioned can SING THEIR ARSES OFF! And we are not simply talking pushing volumes of air through their throats and wrenching sound outta their guts, but actually singing! Some of very "operatic" (Freddy M, Mika, Geoff Tate - even Dio) - some are very bluesy and soulful (Plant, Joplin, Aretha) - All are simply phenomenal people who have either been blessed with outrageously amazing voices or have worked their tails off to develop them or both (probably BOTH) - bottom line is that singing well is HARD to do and requires as much, if not more effort and training as playing any other instrument!

I love great singers! I wish I could do that too!

... I can't really think of anyone else at the moment!

(Ooh! and I agree with Robbie Williams and Bruce Dickinson!)

But you get the point. I like people with voices that can convey emotion and belt it out!

One great singer who's "out there" today would be Tom Waits. Can convey emotion? Absolutely. Can belt it out? Definitely. Not a tenor, though, which seems to be the implicit requirement here.

Edit: Gotta add Bob Dylan. Still singing, and for phrasing he beats even Sinatra.

Ann Wilson - Best female rock voice of all time.
Aretha Franklin -- Oh, my Lord!!!
Paul McCartney, until the mid-seventies - highly underrated. Stevie Wonder - 'nuff said.
Brad Delp and Steve Walsh -- sort of the same kind of style, but two of my favorties, especially Walsh. He's not so good now.
Greg X. Volz -- Petra in their first hayday -- one of the best male rock voices of all time.
Mickey Thompson -- listen to "Jane" or "Fooled Around and Fell In Love".
Bob Carlisle -- Get past the "Butterfly Kisses" crap and listen to some old Allies rock tunes -- one of the best I've ever heard -- worked his butt off in concert.
Paul Rodgers -- very good, but overrated, IMO.
Bryan Duncan -- great funky jazz rock voice.

I'm also surprised that Soundgarden era Chris Cornell hasn't shown up.

Some other favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned:

Otis Redding
Marvin Gaye
Mike Patton

And while they aren't one of my favorite bands (I do like them a bit) I'd have to say Bono has a great voice.

wow someone who is actualy wiling to admit they are a fan of robbie, he awsome.

i personaly like rufus wainright, tom waits(bluesy guy not country)

Seeing as how I sound like a scalded cat, I guess I shouldnt bitch about anyone else. But, I will list my favs.
I like uniquness: Lemmy (Motorhead), Taime Downe (Faster Pussycat)
I like range: Bruce Dickenson (Iron Maiden), Steve Tyler (Aerosmith), Seb Bach (Skid Row)
And I like rawness: Billy-Joe (Greenday), John Corabi (The Scream/Motley Crue), Dropkick Murphys.
Or am I tone deaf? hahahaha
But hey, I love Creedance. I do like Johns' 'country' voice

I have to put in an "Oh Yeah" for

Otis Redding (no longer with us) and Aretha Franklin, and some of the other Stax folks.

Also, I love the late Mississippi John Hurt. He had the most beautiful sweet, soulful voice imaginable. And a phenomenal guitar style. Listen to him sometime, it's almost a religious experience.

And I love Jorma Kaukonen's voice, as well as his guitar playing and composing.

For more gritty down and dirty blues singing, Luther Allison (also deceased). Also Buddy Guy (still around).

Another great pop voice that gets little mention is Don Henley. Also Sting, David Gilmour, Steve Winwood, Van Morrison, Sarah MacLachlan.

And, yes, I may get flamed, but I like Bono too. Great style.

I recently saw Dianne Reeves (jazz singer) live, she was phenomenal. Amazing voice, great jazz material.

Too many others to mention.....

Isn't there a thread here on TB about bass players with great singing voices? I've seen Richard Bona and Oteil Burbridge play and sing live, they're both great players with great voices.
