Disgusted With Massachusetts Music Stores

I have lived close to Hanover for 25 years and have never seen anything at Crossroads that I would consider buying. They claim to be an Eden dealer but never have anything in stock. They are also the store I was referring to when I posted that a store had a MIM Jazz for $849. WAY OVER PRICED!

That's pretty sad indeed. For every band w/ a guitarist their usually is a bassist so why neglect the low enders? I live in the Capitol Region (Albany, upstate) of New York and we are lucky to have about 6-8 stores within 20 miles. Our local GC is simply the worst for basses/bass amps - disgusting. Our local Parkway Music (voted the best for many years in a row) has a GREAT bass and amp selection, almost worth the trip from Boston! Really! A lot of high end and vintage stuff, plus a great staff

I feel the pain, I live in Rhode Island I Frequent a small store in mass . There isnt one Store except that one within 45 minutes from me.( daddys ,and GC ) cant stand either.
The good thing about the guys i frequent theres a good selection of basses. And they actually cut me deals on my stuff.(But they also know ill spend ! )

This is a reason to go the GTGs

There is so much gear there that you cannot try anywhere else, then just order it from your online retailer X.

I have been to South Shore Music and Music Unlimited in Hanover and Kingston. They do not have much. Great if you play guitar and want to spend $3,000 on a Les Paul but nothing decent in basses. Music Unlimited has a used 6 string Pedulla but everything else is Squiers, MIM and lower end Ibanez and Schecters. They are the stores I was referring to in my original post.

I knew it haha. I used to do most of my instrument shopping up there.

It's a sad thing. Cheshire used to have a great bass selection, but now it's all about the guitars. I used to work there, and I was always after them to get more basses. I scored an MIM Jazz for $75 from them. Gig bag included.

Retro on the other hand has the best bass selection in the area. It's not a lot, but they always have a few cool basses. Most of my used basses have come from there. All at a great price.

My favorite store is definitely Downtown Sounds in Northampton, MA. They have a fair amount of new basses. There's usually a fistful of used basses as well. The amp selection is ok at best though.

What's your favorite spot?

I don't have a favorite. I can't find anything decent anywhere local. Northampton is about a 2 hour drive for me. I'm wondering if it would be worth making a trip to NYC.

It's a cool place, prices are OK, always have a nice mix of vintage stuff. Mike Dirnt bought the Guild B302 I had my eye on (rich jerk!)


Also, has anyone mentioned Lastellas in Norwich? Man I love their food (my ex was a waitress at Illianos in...Yantic? I like their food too).

SHucks, thats too bad, hadnt been in a while. So theyve slid into the 6 string abyss too.

I haven't been to Empire yet. They have been doing a lot of radio advertising. I am on vacation until Jan 3 and plan on making a trip there.

I like Retro. Jeff's a good guy. I've bought and sold there, and I don't ever feel like I've been used :). Cheshire is good too,; that's where my kids take music lessons and I get junk like cables and tuners and so forth. they are also nice people. Like you say, I think they've given up on bass.

I'll check out that shop im Northampton. Great town for live music!

I was at Crossroads on Saturday. They want $849 for a MIM Jazz. Not that I would buy one but their prices on everything seemed high on everything. They didn't have anything worth even trying. Nothing else decent at all. They are also listed on the Eden site as a dealer but don't stock any.

It's actually called Boston Guitar Works. I was there a couple of weeks ago. They had the same crap that everyone else is stocking. Squiers, MIM and lower end Ibanez. I checked the GGuitars website. Every higher end bass I clicked on came up as sold. Apparently they are not stocking much either.
