Disposable Bass

I picked up a $45 Squier P-Bass off Craigslist a while ago for that purpose. It ended up being a great little player once set-up. I've debated upgrading the tuners and electronics to better units, but it is a backup and owes me nothing at the purchase price.

I also don't mind loaning it out if needed.

I wonder if it's possible with the right design to create a body AND a neck out of some kind of corrugated cardboard that would withstand the tension of strings? Wouldn't that be crazy? And awesome? A true "throw away bass"....

I travel to schools teaching Bass and guitar. These days it's way to cold to bring my beloved Carvin lb75 out for a ride.
I work a day job at a manufacturing joint and do my favorite job at night. Sometimes I have to leave my gear in my truck. So I decided to pick up a beater Bass. I found an Ibanez Ergodyne EDB 690 on CL for $50. It has a small crack up by the head stock. Nothing super major but I don't ever plan on using it live. Nothing feels or sounds like my Carvin. Which is my poor man's Fodera. I added Nordstrand pups and a Sadowsky pre-amp
The Ibanez just goes in my truck, no case and I don't worry about it at all. It does its job at the schools, ( no one cares about the sound there ) and I'm worry free.
If anyone has a " disposable Bass!" Share a picture. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This bass cost $150 . I shielded it , put a Schaller bridge on it and some Dunlap Super Bright strings . Sounds and plays wonderful , I would play it on any gig and not be embarassed '

A recyclable Bass, now that's a great idea!

When you can get giggable basses brand new for under $200 (less used of course), it's hardly worth thinking about.

This is mine. It's a go-anywhere beater that plays and sounds surprisingly decent. At the moment its my only bass as I've just moved from Australia to New Zealand and my good basses are (hopefully) in a container on its way to Christchurch. I just take the neck of and it fits in a travel bag.

Just your run-of-the-mill Squier Affinity J.

Needs a copper tort pickguard. All stock, except a Wilkinson bridge. Set up nicely with Chromes.

Since I first had kids, I’ve always kept a cheapie around that I could leave out and wouldn’t care if it got knocked over or whatever. Makes for a good loaner, leave in the car, etc. too. I’ve rotated through SX P, cheap Ibanez, Affinity P and now the J. Sell or trade one for the next whenever I feel like I need a change.

All my basses save for one are “disposable”, however, that does not mean they are not awesome, because they are. The most disposable of the lot is the Squier I recently picked up at GC for $75 bucks. Needed a setup, which I did. Is still a far, far better bass than most I played when I was starting back in the early 80s. Basses today are incredible. You can gig a $75 bass! Blows my mind. We got it good, folks.

Any bass is a fretless if you remove the neck!

No, not the half-bass but the whole bass next to it!

(I would LOVE to put a graphite neck on the half bass, but just can't quite bring myself to pay $600 to put a new neck on a "disposable" bass! )
