Distorting certain frequencies.

i would think you'd achieve the sound you're looking for, by splitting the clean signal from you bass and placing a low pass filter BEFORE the distortion effect. either blend the lowpassed/distorted signal back with the clean, or send the distorted to a separate amp and cab.

I've actually found that, if you are splitting your signal and sending one line to a disto effect, a HIGH pass filter or just some some hi-mid EQ around 1K to 3K is what lights my fire. Most methods of getting fuzz/OD/distortion rely on having some high to mid frequency content. At low frequencies the distortion becomes much less pronounced, or less audible. Then, setting the balance between the clean and disto sound is how you maintain a full low end. If you wanted to have any low pass filtering, I would put it on the clean signal path, not the disto signal path. But, that's just me. :cool:

I agree. You want to distort the mids/highs not the lows. That's why I prefer the Sparkle Drive over the Fulltone Bassdrive, the clean knob.

Tube screamers try to emphasis the high end. The bassdrive tries to compenstate for this (and for many, if not most, is successful) but the Sparkle Driver just allows you to dial the lost lows back in.

I never bother with a low pass filter in the clean path. But, that's just me. :hyper:

If you get a blender, take it with you when you try effects. The one negative for blenders is that the clean and effected paths can get out of phase. Then you can get the effect where the two signals seem to be coming from "different places".

Aside from the usual gain and level knobs, the ODB-3 only has a 2-band EQ, and a wet/dry mix knob.

Oh yeah. I am getting such a killer synth-tone out of mine now - CS-3 into Bass Xciter into ODB into CEB. No 'sterile' synth, mind you! It's a bulldog on a short chain, Man!

The thing is, though - I couldn't realize the power of this combo until I put all this into the loop of an NS-2 noise supressor. This thing has remote sensing for the threshold, and works flawlessly. When I'm using my highest-gain sound at regular stage volume, if I turn off the NS, the rig goes into howling pickup feedback (if I'm not playing), and the noise is nearly as loud as full-bore playing - pretty-much unuseable. But remember that I have a ton of compression in there, so when I am actually playing, the compressor is clamping down, and there's only a fraction of the gain (and noise). ..So with clean playing, it's spectacular! The gate closes just slightly faster than the compressor releases, so there's NO noise-rush or 'breathing'. ..and never a pop on gate-open or a stutter on close, because of that remote sensing. I GOTTA get some clips up!
