Most of my basses are DIY Frankensteined basses ... or at the very least modified basses ...

What is the neck pickup on this?

Gutted the Stingray with the graphite neck didn't sound so good - that's possibly the most amazing looking bass I've seen yet!!

Do you lose much 'warmth' switching from wood to graphite like that?

Yes, absolutley all of it - and my EBMM 'Ray (with maple neck) didn't have anywhere near enough "warmth" to begin with, so the project was doomed to failure from the start . It did look killer though !

One day, I might have another go at building another 'Ray around this neck, but it'll have to have an alder (or other lightweight wood) body. Even a light ash body with thin lacquer might work, but the EB Rays have a thick gloss coat and I don't even know what wood they use (ash, basswood?), but it doesn't work for the kind of bass tone that I prefer.

I'd like to see a Jazz body 5-string with a MM pickup (IN the classic stingray position) with a series/single/parallel switch and a 3-band preamp.

Here is my newest bass....I used an old 1988 Warmoth neck for this project. Very simple set up. All passive.V/V/T. A coil splitter is going to installed very soon though.

What is the neck pickup on this?

The bridge pickup is a epiphone t-bird pickup. The neck pickup is a single coil pickup from a dean bass.

So, I am thinking about creating a custom bass, even though I have a couple electric guitars( an epephone sg and a squire strat) the squire is crap, so I was going to build a bass from the strat. fixing the humbuckers, and reusing the neck. could this work does anyone think?

It'a a Warmoth Koa body with a fancy Koa top, a Warmoth neck of Bubinga with an Ebony fingerboard, Hipshot Ultralight tuners, Fender '62 RI bridge, EMG pickups and EQ.

It can be mounted on a NS EUB tripod stand so I can play it "upright" when I want.

Body: Explorer shaped Warmoth swamp ash clear-coated finish
Neck: V-shaped Warmoth (1-1/2" nut- J style) Bird's-eye maple with Bocote fretboard, medium-jumbo frets, Abalone dot inlays, Gotoh tuners
Bridge: Hipshot thru-body single-string bridges
Pickups: Lace alumnitone BassBars, passive
Pots: 250K V-V-T
All gold hardware

All Warmoth, except for the pickups, they're Lace Alumnitone BassBars.
I highly recommend them. www.lacemusic.com

Awesome tone, higher output than my USA Deluxe P-Bass and no distortion. Will never go back to active.

GETTING CLOSE TO FINISHING THIS ONE!

Here is pic of the initial layout with components for last measurements and alignments. The body is ash which I distressed, and then veneered walnut burl over the top. Need to put final polish on it and install the ramp that I built out of red oak and walnut burl. my K logo will go on the ramp in fiddleback maple on the burl.

This is a bass I built using brazilian marupa body topped with guajuvira wood. The pickups are Fender Jazz. KNobs are made from Nevada agate. Sweetest sounding fretless that I have ever played, and also easy to play due to the side markers. more pics and description at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Fender P-Special body, Allparts neck, Hipshot hardware, Fralin pups. It plays nice, but I find myself with the J-pup always off, so I'm probably going to pull it apart and rebuild it with a straight P body.

Now that's an awesome DIY rig!
If you rebuild it, drop a single Darkstar in the P pup spot and eliminate the J pup so I can buy it from you!

UPDATE: Another Warmoth build, this time a T-bird body in apricot flake and a P-bass neck in all bird's-eye maple. Same hardware as above. I love it!
