DIY Effect Makers (club?)

finally able to order the pots and switch to fiish! I found an enclosure to use, yay.

i'm trying ot add to my circuit, other than just a lm386 chip and 2 DC blocking caps. Is there a way to impliment a feedback circuit, switchable by a seperate SPDT/DPDT switch, that DOESN"T function as a bypass? I can only get it to...connect the inpout straight to the output. How the hell do you make a wire only go one way? a third cap?

I should contact boutique cable companies, they seem to know how...
 
so, the third cap is necessary? i didn't mention the pot, but it's also to be added as well. as i've tried so far, with no cap, the signal seems to bypass the circuit completely, and goes straight from input jack to pot, to switch, to output jack.

*sigh* i should have just called this thread "DIY beginner questions from nate"...
 
So just wanted to pop in here and say im another DIY builder, ive been working on a few fuzz pedals, such as a fuzz face, Tone Bender, and a Companion Fuzz. I have been working on opamp guitar related distortion as well. I have managed to sell a few here and there but mainly build stuff for friends now. My first and main love will always be the Fuzz Face which i have cloned and modded many times for bass or guitar players. My main interest now is high powered tube amps. im working on a 170watt 6550/kt88 project now, and am designing a 300watt 6550 amp as well.
 
I've done plenty of electronics DIY in my time, but never any pedals.
i've got something planned now i will take action on when i get the time/money.

Basically running out of a rick-o-sound into the one pedal with two inputs, neck pickup goes to a bit of an overdrive, but keep lots of bass in the signal.
bridge goes to a mad distortion, still with notes still audible and definable. theres also an option for an octave up pitch shift on this signal.
everything is summed nicely into one output
housed in the one enclosure, with two switches, one that mutes everything
and one that turns on the octave up.
if possible running off batteries, as few as possible.

I'm and experienced electronics type having designed all kinds of electronic products over the years, so I'm not limited by project complexity.

Any recommendations / links to projects I might tackle first?

Compressor and envelope filter are pretty easy.
anything involving delay/chorus etc usually (not always) needs expensive delay chips.
Think you might have to go digital for a looper with any usable loop length.

I would suggest building it for 12v. Leave out the 9v charge pump.

Another general question .. most all effects I see are thru components, is this simply because they are easier to solder for the hobbyist?

I'm thinking of chaining a few effects together in a single assembly and can squeeze a lot more in using smt components, will reduce PCB and mechanical enclosure costs, not to mention snake cable count.

Dude, if you've got the time/patience/equipment for surface mount then more power to ya!

thru components are just easier for the rest of us schlubbs
 
Through hole components are easier to hand solder in general. Most SMD stuff isn't hand soldered. (to be fair, neither is most through hole stuff). You may also want a soldering station designed for it (they have much smaller soldering pencils with much shorter reach)

That said, I've been wanting to try out hand-soldering SMDs... but I don't think I'd save that much space, since I'm usually picking enclosure size based on the control layout, and working the board into later.

Did you know that enclosures have sides? It's true! And circuit boards are just as happy there as they are anywhere else in the pedal. That's a lot of space that's never used.
