DIY Effect Makers (club?)

So not really effects but this is what I've been up to for practice. Pretty much a copy and past of a post I put up on ILF.

Here is what I've been up to this evening.

This is our dinning room/sewing/soldering table. **** YEAH BRAND NEW WELLER WES51!!! (in the background)

I did a mock up of the standard Jazz Bass control layout without the pickups and output jack. Not sure what value cap I should have for a JB setup but these were just random leftover supplies that my boss had laying around and he hooked me up with for practicing.

Kind of an ugly solder joint here.

I feel like I'm a little more satisfied with this one.

I melted the insulation on some wires,...so,...the gears are definitely turning for more appropriate routines. That's why I'm practicing.

Tomorrow I'm going to head up to radioshack and pick up some perfboard or see if they have any sort of cheapo DIY something or other to get some more practice on,...probably order some cable and connectors from EWI/Audiopile to wire up my pedalboard with soldered cables (and ditch the George L's),...and order a CB1 from GGG. Hooray for new hobbies/business prospect.

Hello everybody.
Here's a list of what I've built with some pictures, in no particular order.

- Rebote Delay 2.5
- A simple booster, my Confidence Booster

- ProCo Rat clone
- Maestro Brassmaster clone

- MXR Phase90 with a depth mod
- BYOD Mouse
- ValveCaster 9V Tube overdrive

I'm still working on:
- Enveloppe Filter
I only need to drill the holes.
For about 2/3 months.

- Wah pedal
I only need to paint the pedal.

Hvitekrist,

Your Confidence Booster is a beauty!

Do you have any sound clips of how the ValveCaster 9V Tube overdrive sounds with bass?

Thank you, it was my first pedal ever (hence the confidence)

Here is a soundsample of the ValveCaster.
Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass 24 --> OD --> PC

Description:
1. Both pickups, no OD
2. Both pickups, with OD
3. Bridge pickup, with OD
4. Neck pickup, with OD
5. Neck pickup, a little bassboost and midcut, with OD (my favorite)

Yes both neck pickup clips sound really good, which is promising since I have a P-bass.

Did you build it exactly like Matsumins schemo (this), or did you change cap values or something? And do you run it on 9V?

Looking at some of the photos in this thread inspired me to dig up a few photos of some builds

This is a Red Llama - very easy build, but it was a tight fit getting everything in the box.
I made another for a guitar player buddy.

This Green Ringer is what got me back into build stompboxes after a very long break.
The layout isn't quite as neat as the Llama

And here is the power supply I made for my pedal board.
After the photo was shot I added the missing chassis ground :o

You need to get some flux! Some of the solders look cold. With flux you'll get a better and quicker solder joint.

Here's my Klon clone (Saggitarian Charger)

This one gave me fits. Took a lot of work, the PCB is very tight and the layout was a challenge but it turned out nice and works great despite the somewhat sloppy internal layout. The PCB was made from scrap copper clad board I had laying around so it's a bit roughed up. I thought I would make a new one once I was sure I could drill all of the holes properly in such a tight layout, but it was so much work I just used it as is.

Thanks Zen,...your work is very clean.

I've mainly been using the flux to help keep the tip clear of carbon build up and oxidation,...just a little dip in the paste,...a rub on the sponge and tin the tip.

What gauge solder do you all like to use? Is the rosin core bigger in the bigger gauge solder?

I've never used flux for guitar/bass electronics, stompboxes or amp work. A good rosin core solder is all you should need.

+1 for rosin core solder.

If you botch the first try, the flux/rosin will be gone, and the best solution is to desolder (vacuum pump) and start again.

Flux or not, soldering things to a larger piece of metal (as the back of a pot) is never easy, because it's hard to get it warm enough to get a good joint before something starts to melt that shouldn't.

Thanks - I try but I'm not always as successful as I'd like to be :)

I used to use Radio Shack 60/40 .032" Rosin core but I started using AIM 63/37 .040" solder and it doesn't seem to eat the soldering iron tips like the cheaper stuff. I think you can get it from Small Bear, larger amounts and the .032" thickness from Mouser, etc. I keep the Radio Shack stuff for when I run out, but I really prefer the better solder these days.

I only have a 25 watt iron so for soldering onto the backs of pots I carefully use a Weller 8200 at the 100 watt setting and then briefly touch it to the back of the pot and it works very well. I do let the pot cool down before touching it again, and I use an alligator clip attached to any cap leads as a heat sink. One day I'll treat myself to a nice soldering station, it would make working with tiny components much easier, and having variable temperature control would be great.

Just did a little more practice working with resistors and perfboard.

I'm not really building anything,...just got a bunch of 33 ohm resistors in a row and soldered em up.

Took me like ten minutes when after I got my iron setup.

Constructive Criticism is always welcome.

You can give me a number if you like,...but I'm not really about the numbers.
