I've not built it yet, but I'm interested.
I'm completely new to building effects but i've done some soldering before so i think i would like to give it a shot. I would like build the mammoth clone but when i buy the PCB how do i know what parts i need and where they go? I couldn't find any part lists or layouts on the site.

Also, the board is very cheap but what would be a good estimate to final cost including parts, enclosure etc?

For Guitarpcb, you need to be a member before you can view layouts (don't worry, it's free). Barry's forum is also full of tips and tutorials aimed at the beginner. Plus he's a good guy who will always help. :D

For a Mammoth, I would estimate the parts to be anywhere from 35-40 dollars, depending on where you get your stuff. The most expensive stuff will be your jacks, enclosure, and switches.

I've not found a "great" source for enclosures (I live in Canada, mind you), but I get most of my stuff from Small Bear Electronics: Invalid Link Removed

Another great site for switches and jacks is the store at diystompboxes.com: Invalid Link Removed

Caps and resistors I try to source locally. If I need something specialized, it's usually Small Bear. Remember that the gain (HFE) of the transistors has to be 150-200 for the Mammoth to work properly.

For resistors caps and what not, Mouser can't be beat. It is intimidating though, so know, or have a really good idea, of what to need. I prefer Pedal Parts Plus to SB, and part of that is the shipping time. LA to TX isn't a long time. My orders from SB seem to take a while (a week one time!) to process. And then ship. But being in NY, they are alot closer so shipping time is less for you guys.
 
I didn't pair the transistors and it turned out okay, could have been blind luck of course :). I'm actually thinking about adding a bunch of them to my next order to see if it makes a lot of difference. At € 0,05 a piece it might be worth it :).

EDIT: Just opened it up and checked the hfe of the transistors. They were 136 and 156, so pretty good for blind luck. I'm going to check if I can get both of them in the 150-200 range with my next order, might take a while though.

How do you check the HFE of the transistors? I've built a Wooly Mammoth clone, and have an original Wooly Mammoth as well, and they sound very similar. I was just curious for future reference, especially since I ordered several 2n3904's, and want to build another clone for a friend.
 
Most digital multimeters have a function to do so.
Atm I'm working on a Son of Screamer (simplified Tubescreamer)+built in clean blend. Put all of it on breadboard yesterday, now I only need to put 2 pots on there and I can try whether it works or not.... :D
