wow...that sounds crazy. Definately bookmarking it for a future build...

i have one more question to pick your brain: thought of a cool idea at work today, when i have lots of time to think: a ring modulator and a fuzz, with a high and low pass filter, the highs get ringed and the lows get fuzzed - is this feasible? or would it be better to leave the lows clean? I'm looking for high and low pass filters online and i can find a high pass that i think is simple and usable, but not a low-pass...


i think this is pretty ambitious but i think i can do it
 
nice, a diy pedal from '86 still going strong, must have been made pretty well. sounds like you definitely deserve your resister band: red-violet-red (#27).

The PCB on the old Tube Sound Fuzz was drawn by hand with a sharpie :p . I had it open about a year ago to install a Millennium bypass and an LED. These days I use the iron-on/laserjet printer method which makes thing much easier and neater.

Next on my list is an Aquapuss, but I'm also looking for a good bass chorus schematic.

Have you seen the zombie chorus? I haven't really tried it but i've read about a lot of people wanting to make it on diysb:

*sigh...now i suddenly want to try to make a custom sized spring reverb to fit on my pedalboard... so many ideas, so little time/money/components. If only i could get paid to screw around with circuits...

Also, what do you guys do for blends, active or passive?

I'm gonna be needing a new iron, any suggestions.
 
Also has anyone built a Wooly Mammoth clone? I've heard they are barely worth the $300+ but as a $30 DIY they are fairly decent.

I built one using a vero-layout from a dutch forum. Turned out quite good, as far as I can tell it sounds exactly like the original: gated, synthy fuzz.

As karter2000 mentioned, the transistors are important. I experimented with different transistors for Q2 but in the end I settled on the recommended 2N3904.

These are Radio Shack trannies, not exactly exotic.

I am very surprised that they sell this puppy for $300+.

Even for a boutique, hand soldered, individually tested pedal, it does not quite make sense.

I was surprised as well, once it was done and working. With the trannies, the hard part is finding ones with a hfe of 150-200. You could try the Radio Shack ones, but I would check the gain. I had bought a bag from my local electronics store, and they were all >300, which were useless for the WM. I ended up getting two from Small Bear which were perfect.

And I supposed paired with a similar HFE...
 
who wants a custom reverb tank or wants to be paid for all this? I'd love go get paid for it..

anybody know if reverb springs have to be metal? everybody talks about using slinkies, but they always show the metal ones..what about the little plastic ones?

The idea of spring or plate reverb is that metal has good internal reflection: the waves hit boundaries and bounce around without being dampened too much. This bouncing around emulates way sound waves bounce around an acoustic space. Plastic dampens these reflections way too much. So a plastic slinky verb would have such a fast, dead decay that it wouldn't be too useful IMO.

I didn't pair the transistors and it turned out okay, could have been blind luck of course :). I'm actually thinking about adding a bunch of them to my next order to see if it makes a lot of difference. At € 0,05 a piece it might be worth it :).

EDIT: Just opened it up and checked the hfe of the transistors. They were 136 and 156, so pretty good for blind luck. I'm going to check if I can get both of them in the 150-200 range with my next order, might take a while though.
 
I had nothing to do today so I raided my parts bins and got the bits together to make up a Wooly Mammoth clone. Drilled out the enclosure and wet sanded it to a nice finish, did up the vero circuit and started getting bits into place.

Usually with the 3PDTs I give the lugs a little scratch and tin and make sure to sink off some heat with needle nose pliers... Anyway, I got lazy today and skipped all three steps :rolleyes: I was having a bugger of a time getting the solder to flow to the lugs. Whilst wrestling with the lug I was going to use as my output, I noticed that the lug was starting to tip over :( The pedal does work, but the output is intermittent. Looks like I just cooked my first 3PDT and I'm going to have to swap it out.

Moral of the story, don't be lazy with the prep work!
 
Cool! But that's actually bigger than the standard old 1590b. And it seems like it would be tough to build in since you have to put everything in, ship-in-a-bottle style. What's your experience been so far with them?
