Double Bass DIY pickup

I found some plans online for building a piezo pickup, and I am considering trying it. Anyone have any pointers? Also, I don't have a preamp yet, so how easy is it to get ahold of a cheap one, or at least something that can be used as one for now?

i played through a home made piezo for a while before i bought one.
they are real simple and effective.
i put it through a K&K preamp (belt-clip one)... pretty much the cheapest preamp i could get, and to be perfectly honest... this was a great setup... bit noisy etc... but good.
