I got the opportunity to play a new P bass and a new J bass from Dan Lakin today.
The basses are made in Korea.
There are a lot of colors available and Dan is looking to pre-sell the first 12. The first ones will get to chose any finish they desire.
Bodies – Poly not nitro.
Neck are finished using a gun stock oil same as Lakland USA . Necks and bodies all finished in Korea.
20 frets – 7.25 radius.
Setups will be done in the US.
Both have alder bodies and rosewood fb's.
All of the basses will have bone nuts.
All basses will have oil finishes on back of neck.
Graphite in necks.
Vintage neck profiles.
Available direct from manufacturer
Hipshot USA hardware and the bridge is the A style model.
The ferrules on the back of the bodies are USA made.
All the screws that hold the neck on as well as the neck ferrules are US made as well.
All the basses will have USA Dunlop straplocks.
The finish on each bass was immaculate.
The overall construction was some of the best I've seen.
The basses weren't to light or to heavy.
The J bass sounded really really good and when I soloed the front pickup it still was able to fill up good tonal space, when the bridge pickup was soloed it had growl for days and the mids really rang out(in a good way). The pickups on both basses are of a very high quality in regards to sound.
For the record a very nice sounding J bass.
The P bass was very classic sounding but I was able to get a good modern roundness out of it.
Both basses had GHS roundwounds (I don't know the series) and they seem to make both basses.
These basses will list for under a grand and from what I saw and heard today Dan is coming out with a great product as time will definitely show.

Wow. A P and a J. I kind of expected more from such an innovator. I guess the market being what it is.....

I spoke to Dan last night, I think he said Korea on the pickups as well. He said there was some back and forth to get them right, but they nailed them.

About 6 or 7 months ago I checked the pickups out in a few different basses and they are definitely of a quality that well be recognized.
I dig the two tone vibe of the bodies. I've been contemplating a 4 string jazz, so maybe these will help me take the plunge!
What an innovator. Seriously, how many times can one person rip off Fender? Didn't he sell Lakland, now he is selling yet another fender clone? Greed and a lack of vision
I don't think this is either fair or accurate. His original basses weren't really Fender clones (unless you call any double cutaway bass a Fender clone). He didn't really sell Fender clones until later. And they were ALL great basses.
I prefer Lakland to Fender. I'm sure his new ones will be great too.
yeah there is no rule that says you have to always innovate. nothing wrong with making something fender style and doing a good job of it!
