+1 Hugh used to my setups and thru him i sold Dan a stingray so i could purchase my first 5'er. Regretted that later. Anyway Hugh is a ninja with necks and frets.

did you read the thread? The trigger of the entire thread is the return of Dan on the market. For the moment he is just back to business selling used (new?) basses / amps, as at his beginning pre Lakland. Better news to come soon.

But coming out with a new line of instruments takes time, so it makes sense.

Does anyone know if he has a non competitive clause in the sale of Lakland? That's fairly common, and why Leo Fender was only a consultant at Musicman.

Dan Lakin is definitely coming out with a new line of basses and there was talk of a possible M/J model.

Your history is wrong. Leo was a consultant to CBS for a while after selling Fender to them. He had a five-year non-compete clause in the sales agreement. That's why his involvement wit Tri-Sonics which became Music Man was kept quiet. But when the non-compete provision expired there was no secret it was Leo at Music Man.

Will he stay on the usual Lakland body shape or he's doing something even different? Or maybe he's just going back, hangin' to the traditional J/P?

I would be all about a 5er HB! EVEN Carl Pedigo wont build one.....must be a reason.....i hear string tension but could be wrong

Oh man, naming consultants have given us some of the most cheesy or just plain nonsensical corporate names in history.

Yup....my former employer (arthur andersen) spent like over a million and the company came up with an orange ball and "Andersen"??????

We came in monday to oranges and new business cards on our desk....no idea of the change before it happened

Less than 2 years later ....well...you know the rest of the story

Leo had CLF Research after selling Fender. Leo had a 10-year non-compete clause with CBS which he signed in 1965. Tri-Sonic, Inc. (not Tri-Sonics) changed their name to Musicman in 1974. So Leo Fender was a silent partner in Tri-Sonic, Inc, which was formed in 1971. My history is fine. My point was this is common when a partner leaves a business or sells it.

Well expensive for some can be $500 dollars while expensive for others could be $1500.

And between that could be just right.

yes: tell it to Warwick!!! I frankly guess that it is just a matter of good will, a bit of courage (strongly believe in the product) and the right design skills: to have at least 21 playable frets on a standard body with a long scale, either you design a Casady with the furtherly cut lower horn or you'll end up having a neck diver.

Most go for the compromise: a short scale hollowbody, that for 4 strings is acceptable. But for a proper good low B you need at least 34"; so it's definitely not so easy to have a full or semi hollow whole body with 5 strings neck...

But the Lakland design is ok, with the offsethorns and a 34" scale already; so I don't quite understand why they never got the fiver on that body: it would have been a seller!!!!!

I don't like the name either. Lakin would be acceptable. Initials never seem to work well. MTD, DLB, FGN - All have no quality to them and sound cheesy to me. Such a name says - "We couldn't think of anything better and were too cheap to hire a naming consultant".

He probably can't make anything with LAK in the name, but surely can do better than DLB.
