Nice! I don't have the means to get one when they release (taxes grumble, grumble...) but I will soon and I know these will be killer.
Great, thanks for sharing. IMO, Lakland and, now possibly D. Lakin basses (not tried one yet), does a better Fender than Fender.
I would have liked him to start off with the MM/J style, but guess what sells?
^^^ Well, the article that Jauqo linked says he's working on an MM/J model, so perhaps patience pays...
Disappointed that there's nothing new here, at all. Even insisting on 20 fret necks. What is point of Fender clones? Fender based design with serious improvements or custom options, that's something else. How about some custom pickup configurations or 21, 22, 24 fret necks? Interesting figured woods? Laminated necks? Rear routed, pickguardless versions? Something, anything, besides a nearly identical Fender clone with a slightly different headstock and maybe some different color finish options. Please wake me when he comes up with something worth a second look.
I'm afraid I have to +1 this ^^. I see nothing in that no treble article that excited me at all. Lakin probably has the exact same machines that produce the Lakland Skylines making his new basses.
If they are as lightweight and well made as the early Skylines, and with similarly great feeling necks, they will make a viable alternative to a Fender P or J.
There are a million Fender clones out there but not all have the quality and nMe recognition at a decent price point. I think he'll do well and when he has some cash flow he can start to sell the fun stuff.
I definitely like the truss rod wheel, but it's $1200 and I'd probably just pay another $150 and buy a US made Fender. There has to be something to differentiate and the truss rod wheel isn't really enough. Dan know the market and I'm definitely not the entire bass market. Hope he does really well so new things will follow.
I'm sure they'll be nicely built. Seems like everything Korean is put together well. Unless I misread, the Dan Lakin basses will be Korean built?
That said, I would hope they'll be lighter weight than the typical early Skylines were. Sub 9 lbs would be good, but if they have ash bodies like the Skylines, they'll probably run heavier.
The people who were helping Dan manage it for several years before he sold the company. Hanson Musical Instruments, owned by John Pirruccello is the owner of Lakland for the last four years.
Spent some time with Dan this evening and had the pleasure of playing the blue J-Bass pictured on his new website (Invalid Link Removed). I can now say first hand that Dan has done a fantastic job! Wow ... plays like a dream, sounds wonderful and the weight, feel and balance are all spot-on. That is one hell of a nice bass - especially at that price point. I'm even more impressed than I expected to be.
I played the P and the J Lakins. Incredible!!!! the graphite rods in the neck pushed them to the next level. I want a P. bad. nice balance with no neck dive.
