Having just made the move back to covers after many years doing the original thing, I find myself dusting off my old song learning tricks. The first thing I do before I even grab my bass is get to know the song and it's structure. Then I begin to work on picking the peices apart working on the chord structure. Then I fill in all the nice stuff like the runs and fills. Like LiquidMidnight, I try to make each song my own to keep it interesting for me. There's a lot of great bass out there these days in the rock world and the bass is nice and loud in the mix. Enjoy each song.
Another thing I like to do is grab s dong within my reach (with a little struggle) and work it until it's done. It's very rewarding and helps you put some new tools into the toolbox. I keep going back to "Cupid's Dead" from Extreme's III Sides to Every Story. Great groove and helps get some chops back in place.
