Do I need a Cab for my Markbass CMD 121p?

I love my little markbass combo. I play in a gigging coverband and its PERFECT for places with their own sound. They just plug in the back and I get to carry around the 25lb guy and use it as a monitor.

I also love it for some of the smaller venues we play cuz of the portability, but recently we have been playing some larger rooms where we bring our own sound. I dont run through the PA cuz our PA sux lol.

To the point:
The low B string always sounds kinda farty running through this with my Musicman SR5 HH. It just feels like I need a bigger speaker or another 12 inch.

So here is my question...to get a fuller bass sound out of the Markbass combo, would putting another 12inch cab underneath help me out? or would I better off with a bigger 15 inch cab?

I know what you mean. I that that terrific little combo but moved up to the CMD 151p for the same reason. It was a better overall single cab solution. That said, there is a NYC121 cab for sale on TB, the perfect companion for that 121p.

+1. second 121p should help a lot. always happens with micro combos. they sound great but just miss, so everyone always gets an extension cab.

thanks guys..i was just kinda nervous about getting another 121 cab because it handles the same frequencies...i thought maybe because it doesnt handle the low frequency a low B string produces maybe thats why it sounded as such? but another 121 cab should help out, correct?

the idea that the cab must reproduce the fundamental freqs of a low B string is a myth that has been disproven here before. But honestly, I would probably try before I buy. I did feel the little guy by itself got a little weak on the lowest notes, and though it will boost the lows quite nicely to add a second cab, it may not be enough for your tastes. still, there's always the tone knob.

thanks man thats the kinda info i was lookin for! another 121 would be amazing for portability (and would look great). i dont really use the low B a ton, but when i do i would like it to fill the air nicely and have some sustain and UMPH to it that I feel I lack with just the little combo.

I have a MB CMD 121. For larger gigs I have used an Aguilar GS112 or my Avatar 1-15 (the older smaller design), both are 8 ohm cabs. I like to stand the Aggie up on it end with the MB on top. It works great, seems to be fairly uncolored, and clear. The Avatar has a little more umph and not as much of a hi-fi sound. Both work great for small jobs were I need just a little more support than the MB alone.

It might be worth trying the MarkBass NY cab, the four 6 configuration produces nice clean lows.

FWIW I have the 121 cab that I got for small gigs. I also have a lm tube 800 head. I have found that the Mark Bass heads seem to run "better" at 4 ohms rather than 8 ohms.
My GK mb500 seems to outrun the lm 2 8 ohms. You may change you thinking on the combo by adding another cab. BTW, a 2 12 w/ 2 tweeters is a pretty nice bass rig, and yes it will handle a 5 string.

I used a cmd121p for awhile with an epi UL112 (series 1). Paired fairly nicely. Even better was the epi ps112. That plus the mb combo sounds really good. And remember in terms of portability a folding hand cart is your friend. Makes everything easier.

I run my 121p with an Ampeg 210he underneath, and it gets the job done really well to my ears, even with the different speaker sizes. It makes up for the little bit that's missing with just the combo when I can't run through a PA.

Its either this option, for me or the new gallien MB 212 combo. This one is definately the better option considering I can just take the combo if I feel like it and only use the extention cab for biger gigs. But it is a bit more pricey. Anyone have a comparison in tone for me> Im highly expcting the Markbass to sound better.
