Do I need a DI box?!

If you gig, you will need a DI box in your gig bag.

 any decent venue should provide with with enough DI for all your band if you need them

Whenever I stumble upon a soundguy who is unable to take the sound coming out of the cab with a mic, I tell him to use the DI from my Eden WT-400 anyway. I've had too many noise issues with those DI boxes.

Right, but what does it boost?

In the case of GK, it's listed as boosting 10KHz - a rather high frequency, definitely not in the territory of mids. I'm not sure if it's only boosting those super-high frequencies, though - the knob illustrates doing more than that...

As for the SansAmp, I believe it's set lower, because when you crank that Presence knob, low action can equal brittle "clank". :hmm:

I did some Googling on the Sansamp, and it appears to boost the high mids and highs. So I was incorrect in saying Presence usually scoops the mids- in the case of GK and Sansamp, it boosts the highs and/or high mids. I had assumed it also boosted the lows, which would result in "scooped mids", but nope! No boosting of the lows there. Now I know.
