do I really need more than one dirt pedal?

I was playing some muse stuff recently, and I know he uses a fuzz.I have a boss obd-3,and I compared the sound of my overdrive to his fuzz on the album, and the differences are negligible. is there really any difference between overdrive and fuzz? do I need an actual fuzz pedal to imitate this sound? is there any way to eq my boss to make it sound fuzzy?

You may not need more than 1 fuzz but there may come a day when 1 simply will not do.

I have a pretty good collection of fuzz for various purposes but only have 2 on my go to board: BrassMaster clone and a OD. Gives me 3 choices medium overdrive, smooth gated octave fuzz and with both on a fire breathing beast verging on feedback.

It really depends on what you're playing, who you're playing with, and ultimately, how much variety you want. I've seen guys use only one fuzz and guys who use 5 (umm, that would be me...).

Do I need all 5?.....for me, hell's yeah! Heck, I'd have 15 if I had the resources.

The thing is, that Boss ODB-3 'overdrive' of yours is badly labelled IMO. Far too much fizzy gain to be classed as an overdrive. Try a decent overdrive and fuzz next to each other and you'll see how different they are.

then what exactly does it sound like to you? I used it side by side with a guitar fuzz once, which was a major POS, and there were some slight differences. the boss has always been really satisfying, and I had assumed as far as quality vs. cost boss pedals are about as good as it gets.

I currently use three dirt pedals on my board. I probably only need one, arguably two, but they're on there and they each make me happy for different reasons.

Dirt doesn't have to always be a heavy, fuzzed out mess. There is a spectrum from an "almost barely there" grind to a full out "face melting nuclear destruction" box.
