I also have a couple I'm glad I got away from. And I wouldn't trade my wife of 25 years for anyone, anywhere, anytime. That being said there are a couple that sometimes I wonder what life would have been like if they had worked out. But I know it wouldn't have been as good as I have it now.
It's the road not taken thing.

I was engaged once before getting married. Thank heavens that one failed!! In retrospect it would have been both difficult and unsuccessful. If that qualifies as one that got away, I'm damn lucky that it happened.

I'm sure there are other people in the world who would have been compatible with me, but I don't know whether they would be AS compatible, nor whether I would have met them. My wife and I are in tune well enough that in 40 years we've never had a fight. We talk things over and sort them out. Probably related to both having master's degrees in Adult Education, so we tend to think and talk rather than fight.

We're happily married and retired with two fantastic daughters who love 60 miles away. Life is darn good.

Sure, yeah. Several. But each of those relationships ended for a reason, whether or not I saw it at the time.

My wife is awesome. We've been together a long time. We're still happy. I can't crowd my brain with speculation about what might have been had I ended up with someone else. My speculation would likely be wrong anyway. I'm in a good relationship. I won the lottery.

Life is long with odd twists. I recently connected with a woman I knew in college 40 years ago. We didn't gel at all back then but could have easily now. She said she was an amoeba then. I was a bale of thunderstorms. She is divorced, I guess. It doesn't matter. Another road not taken. Turns out there are lots of those. It is a long strange trip. And I am still happy on the narrow road I took.

No, they don't have 'the one who got away'. They have a fantasy about someone who they don't have to deal with daily. That kind of relationship is very easy to maintain...in your mind.
My wife and I have been together 4+ decades and she still amazes and amuses me daily, without even trying.
Recently, I overheard her BFF ask her:
"If your husband passed away, would you remarry?" She said, NO, do you know how long it took to train this one"
Of course 'train' meant my willingness to be kind and considerate at all times, my goal all along. As she does.
Signing off. I'm going to see if she needs a coffee refill

:roflmao:

My wife would probably agree. I am domesticated now and make the coffee every morning and do a bunch of other things like that. It is the little things that make bigger things possible.

It took a while for me to become housebroken and domesticated. I doubt she would want to train anybody again. And the flip side is also true. Who would ever want to retrain me?
